Kevin,W you mentioned about only using enough velocity to leave a ball in the intended target (deer). What was the velocity that they were shooting at?
I know this is a stupid question but I'm going to ask anyway as I haven't found the specific passages yet . Does a SWC count as a conical for the hunt ?Since you showed me yours............I'll show you mine.

However, we're required to hunt with conicals in pistols, in Arkansas.

LEE 220 grain conical for ROA (pure lead)
The only LEE mold I ever owned.
Conical is anything other than a round ball .45 caliber of 200 grain or more. Not sure what revolver has the required 9" barrel .I know this is a stupid question but I'm going to ask anyway as I haven't found the specific passages yet . Does a SWC count as a conical for the hunt ?
Seems like a 257 gr 429421 @ .448 in a Dragoon over 40 gr of FFFg would be spirited in the neighborhood of low Ruger 45 Colts or start 44 mag .
Ballistic pendulum...the early chrono graphs didn't exactly measure speed.
what they done was measure how far a weight was moved by the rifle, when shot, and then back calculated the energy to the speed portion.
That 9" barrel length rule is asinine and treat it as such. If you count the cylinder, the ROA makes the cut.Conical is anything other than a round ball .45 caliber of 200 grain or more. Not sure what revolver has the required 9" barrel .

Was that fired from a 12 ga shotgun?Steel balls..... I started with bb's. Dragon flies were another fun one. Yellow jackets hoovering around their entrance hole also.
But 30 years ago knowing a standard Winchester slug would not penetrate the neck armor of large crocodilians on Amazon tributaries the round ball came to mind. Cast of WW at .685 they can be dropped in a standard Winchester field load. Double + the penetration of a slug.
Then I came across a coffee can of .685 industrial motor ball bearings. At 1500 fps one inch soft plate steel was easily punched. Near 2 feet of dried oak. I would take that ball against any beast....
