Hi Folks,

I've been shooting (and casting, and loading, and 'smithing) for about 7 years since recovering from a long term (5 years) eye injury. I was lucky enough to hook up with a great shooting partner through LASC, Alan Brooks, who died a couple of years ago.

I'm 99% a pistol shooter. Of the "stand up on your hind legs and shoot" persuasion. This pretty much guarantees that I will always be the lowest scorer at any silhouette match. I can't hit anything with a rifle because I'm cross dominant.

I try to get to the range and blast away a few pounds of lead every week. I found about 800 pounds of lead just lyin' around at work a few years ago, so I will be able to keep shooting for a while ;)

As long as we don't have to talk about politics or self defense training, I'll be happy!

No politics permitted here. Pretty strictly enforced too.

Self defense isn’t a topic that has come up here.

It's a damn huge pain. I had a TOZ35M fitted with a set of canted grips, and I can't hit anything with it because I'm used to holding the gun cockeyed!

I shot Creedmoor right handed and left eye for many years, works quite well.

I'd say you're in good company with many of us here who struggle to keep enjoying the shooting sports as best we can with less than stellar vision.

I was born left/left, and it served me well for a lot of years in shooting until I got pars planitis in 2004. Now with the floaters, laser surgeries, steroid shots, epiretinal membranes, and PVD, my detail vision is getting pretty rotten, especially in my left eye. Our brains do strange things with our vision, I have pretty much given up shotgunning because my brain transposes detail from my clearer right eye to the left, making me "appear" to see better than I do....but also creating a sort of cross-dominance which is extremely annoying. A whole bunch of Sharpie dots on the middle of the right shooting lens helps with the dominance...but then I can't pick up the bird as easily or quickly and lose it quickly. Shooting IDPA long ago and fooling around informally with three-gun stuff in recent years has taught me that "handedness" is a state of mind and muscle memory, not a permanent handicap. Now that my non-dominant eye sees better, I spend more time shooting righty than I used to, and it isn't an insurmountable thing even for a middle-aged person to get pretty comfortable switching sides.

Ian,
Ever try the magic dots to put on your shooting glasses? I used one shooting skeet on my left lens to keep my left dominant eye from taking over. I’m a righty and left eye dominant. Only used it shotgunning. And welcome aboard!

Now I'm confused... Uh... Okay...

Won't even try to shoot a rifle anymore. Beside being cross-D, I got coke-bottle glasses. I use a Merit attachment for most shooting. I find that with extra effort, I can shoot into the middle of the fuzzy sights and fuzzy target and do surprisingly well with my regular glasses... But it's tiring. One reason to learn hip shooting.

And thank you all for the "welcome aboard's"!

Anyone who uses Ken Curtis as his avatar is OK in my book. He
was always one of my favorites. Welcome aboard!
