.308 and .300 BLK range report

I was able to get out and do a bit of shooting this morning. We ended up having to shoot in an old gravel pit so distance was limited to 80 yards. I really wanted at least 100. Anyway....

The two rifles used were a heavy barreled Rem. 700 in .308 and a Ruger American Ranch in 300BLK.

First was the 300blk. Bullet was the NOE 230gr PB designed for this cartridge. I loaded rounds with two powders. IMR4198 which showed some promise. 5 shot groups just under 1.5" @ 80 yards.

I finally got a can of CFE BLK to try out. All of these bullets were sized to .311" and lubed with Glens black.
The powder charge was 10.8gr and gave 5 shot groups of just over 1" @ 80 yards.IMG_1752.JPG

The .308 was loaded up with the NOE 312290 sized to .311" lubed with Glens black and a Hor. GC
They were set on top of 20.0gr SR4759
The best 5 shot group @ 80 yards was .500"
The top group had a first shot flyer to open up the group to just over an inch.
The other four are .550"

All in all it was a fun morning with my brother. I have high hopes for that big 230gr NOE in my 300blk
It wants to shoot. I need to play around with alloy and powder charges. IMR4198 and CFE BLK both look like they can work well.

My 700 seems to like that big ol 220gr slug. I need to send some of those down range to the 500 yard steel.

It's hard for me to shoot small groups with the 300. The rifle came with a 2x7 scope. 7 just isn't enough for me to try for bug holes.(excuses, excuses,!!)

it falls in a pretty good window for the 300, IMO it would be right at home in the 7.62X39 round.
and work fairly well with light jacketed bullets in the 223.

Cfe blk is interesting, I'd like to see some pressure curves. Some reports are it needs to be compressed, just started using it, good so far.

it's right on the verge of being too slow for the 300 really.
it's seems to burn fairly clean at lower pressures and it produces a good amount of gas volume.
it might have some real good attributes for medium speed cast loads in other case sizes.
maybe as good as RL-7 ? [shrug] better than 4227?

I agree with Fiver, the stuff is way too slow for supers if you want to get the most out of it. The case is just too small for anywhere near top velocity or pressure.

The 30-30, SPC, and Soviet rounds might just love it, though, as might the WT.

It's making almost twice the pressure that RX-7 does with 230 cast subsonic loads, and that is a GOOD thing!

I poked around some more on Hodgdon's database and found only 6.8 SPC and 7.62x39 Soviet data for the BLK powder. The Soviet pressure was listed in CUP.....???? They don't have a piezo barrel for that?

typical new hodgdon powder thing.
put it out for at least 6-9 months then release some limited data, if it looks like it's gonna sell then put some loads together and test them for the following years magazine.

I swear sometimes they just use whatever left over bullets they got from last falls deer hunt for their data.

I ran like 60 rounds through the BLK that day. I started with Lil Gun, H110, IMR4198 and finished with the CFE BLK. I saw lots of unburnt powder toward the end. Next time out I'll start with the CFE and a clean bore and see how it goes. Accuracy fell off toward the end as well....

Walter..l'm a little late to the table...but just want you to know that I am impressed with your shooting.. (as well as your casting and reloading skills)...some fine shooting my friend...

BTW...I am a little surprised that that much powder stabilized those heavy bullets in the .308...now I am going to have to try it..:)

I've heard the comment about unburned powder, I only shot ~ 10 through the carbine, saw some leading from pushing the PB too hard but no unburned powder. I think low flash is also advertised but I don't shoot at night. It is supposed to be a sub powder. It appears to be like cfe pistol, takes more powder for the same fps/psi.

Dan. Your words are very kind. Thank you.
Popper. Next time I'll start with a clean barrel and this powder only. It could have been a combo of things.....

I had 21 of the NOE 230gr bullets laying around from the last session. I'm loading them up the same as last time using 10.8gr of CFE BLK
I'll scrub the bore on the rifle this time as I've had jacketed shot in it.
The only thing that will be different this time is the lube will be Lar's 2500+
