.309 in a M94 Win 30-30

Jim, I really don't have an assumption on this issue, because of the factor of Marlin
barrels compared to Win BBls. Most folks have said that Marlin bbls require fat bullets
due to the 8 groove bbls. As I am shooting a 94win, and no marlin experience, I just
don't know.

I will load up some pb 30's, at .309, and try them in the1l00-1200 fps range next
time I go to the range. In the meanwhile, I am now thinking
of trying. .309 in a couple of my bolt action 30's, and not just the 30-30. I do just
know that I will now stick with .309's in my 94 and the Rx7 load.

Ian, I think maybe I just had a good day, based on "even a blind hog
once in awhile finds an acorn".

How ever, a scope mount on a 94 win
being off set, looks about as ugly as a fat girl looks in leotards. I have
one, and I mounted it with a 3x Weaver, and it shot ok (a few years
back), but just could not tolerate the looks. Some things are just not
meant to be.

Shot the 94Win today with .309 and .310. 50 yds with Ranch Dog, GC's
over 27.5 gr Rx7;. Smallest 5 shot group with .309 was 1.25, largest was 2.2",
with 4 of the 5 going into 1.25.

Williams Receiver sight with fairly large hoodedbead. The best I could do with .310 311467, over 27.5 gr Rx7 was 2.125, and311291HP, .310, 10 rounds into 3.150", and with 7 of the 10 going into 2.250.

It definitely appears that my 94 in 30-30, shoots much better, group wise with
.309. Believe Rx7 is an excellent powder for loads in the 2000+ range.

That is outstanding to hear! My best load with Marlin is .311 and 27 grns RX7. Now all i need to do is size to .309 and stuff with 27 grns of RX 7 for the 94! I love simple!!!

as I said, bought the 309 sizer based on this thread. been going fat for all my Marlins! And now, in addition to the pre-64 94 30-30, I have a pre-64 94 32 WS. So will look at the 'true to bore' cast bullet sizing for them. Thanx!

Paul and Oscar, I don't think anyone one asked so I will, What lead mix are you both casting ? I assume your using same Bnh fer all the different sized loads and lubes your experimenting with. Just curious as I'm following this.
I've was trying different loads with Red Dot, RD311165 TL GC.
If I get any results worth posting I will. Going to take time.

Good luck n happy hunting

I am not very specific, and generally use an alloy of mostly
range scrap (about 80 percent) 20 per cent lino, some tin,
and usually water drop. Air cooled runs about 15-16 BH,
water drop runs about 20-22 bh. Note the about!

Mike - I am WAY more simpleton than Paul! All my alloy is scrounged COWW + 2% tin, lubed with Ben's LL. Went to Ben's form 45/45/10. I did alloy in some Lino for a few, ~15 bhn -haven't shot, did it for hunting, then reading Glen Fryxell and said was too hard for hunting...

Paul...your results doesn't surprise me much..why?.... 'cause you used three different bullets and with possibly ( if you're like me) three different alloys...the highest charge I have been able to get the 311467 to shot in a 30-30 using RX7 is 20 grains...the 311291 MAY be suffering from too small of a nose...S-O-O-O..to get a real idea of how the gun reacts to .309 vs .310 I would suggest using the RD bullet in both sizes with the same powder charge..or any of the three in .309 and .310 with the same powder charge...also there is that rare occasion when a gun prefers a different size for a particular bullet..Dan

BTW All I got with the 311407 sized .309 and 20 grs of RX7 was leading in my 30-30 until I moved up to .310 then good things happened..

I'm going to ask because my expirence is limited, but doesn't hardness play a big role in leading especially in low velocity loads ?
Either in PB or gas checked ?
I might be confused with pistol leading where to hard+low velocity won't allow the bullet base to expand and seal the bore. ( auto spell says obstruction) I can't even pronounce the word I mean.
So any thoughts.

It's about the fit to start .
I shoot comparatively soft bullets in rifles and have encountered only 1 pistol that made me use a hard bullet .
