I misunderstood that you modified the mould.
Thanks for taking the time to explain.

I ended up with a 311413 fairly soon after I started casting. They were common, but not well liked so it was cheap. I started loading it with what was called "The Load" back then. It was about 13gr of Red Dot (one of the Lee scoops was that size to make it even easier to load). This was a load that offered safety and good accuracy in any military rifle from 7 to 8mm diameter, although at reduced velocities. I used it in a Krag mostly, but also a 2-groove 1903. It was a GREAT plinking load.

It was some years before I tried the 311413 at higher speeds and pressures. Things went bad fairly quickly, but I could easily fall back to "The Load", and did so. No problems since then.

That 13 grs. of R Dot was probably building much higher pressures than you would have believed.

311413 appears to be the same as my H&G #20.
It shoots very well in my Garand if I keep the velocity down....dale

Establishing a ceiling of about 1,500 - 1650 fps will make most .30 cal. cast bullet shooters happy with the 311413.

Have that mold in a HP, that Buckshot did years back. It was
shortly after than if I remember right that he stopped HP'ing
pointed bullets. Have never worked with it much.

" In the early days ", Rick HP'd about 8 - 10 moulds for me.
He was always a pleasure to work with.

I think Rick (Buckshot) was the first guy I PMed back and forth with, some 7 years ago when I registered on CB. Very capable machinist, loves old milsurps and his mules.
Man after my own heart.

I'm just starting to work with the 311413 in a break action 30-30. Mine is an old Ideal SC ventless mold. Trying to find a load that will provide squirrel accuracy out to at least 50 yds. We have little ground squirrels that we call desert rats here. I've tried 2400 at 15 and 16 gr, with the shotgun effect. 16 gr they were starting to keyhole, and 15 cut the scattered "group" in half with all bullets flying straight. I'm gonna go a little lower maybe this afternoon.

30-30 Win. , 311413 sized .310 or .311, with 7.2 grs. of B'eye.

Ben

Here I'm shooting 7,2 grs. at 100 yards with my Super 14, 30-30.

One of my most accurate handguns, my T/C 14", Super 14, 30-30.

This one usually shoots a lot better than I can shoot.

Here it is at 100 yards with it's favorite bullet and load.
( The " low round " is obviously me ! ! )

Ben, you have recommended Bullseye many times. It's high time I get a lb and follow tried and true advice. :headscratch:

This is a 10 round group fired at 50 yards.
See load data below.

I asked my friend Bryan to shoot 10 rounds also @ 50 yards.

Here is the load that we were both shooting.

This is the bullet I was shooting today out of my Handi.
The Accurate ( 31 - 175 BP ) , it is a clone of the SAECO # 315. A great plain base .30 cal. cast bullet.

2400 has a low end threshold too.
I would definitely step down/up I guess in powder speed.

Part of my problem may also be that this gun has a ghost ring Williams sight. The first one I've ever used. I've always preferred the U shape rear blade.
