The 38 Long Colt was in between the 45 Colt and 45 ACP. I believe there were several other rounds tested, don't recall what they were, but IIRC the British success with the 455 type cartridges (I don't recall the specific nomenclature) in "Inja" and various other places, plus the familiarity with the 45 Colt/Schofield kind of steered the opinion to the 45 before hand.

And yes, St Elmer definitely spoke of the 45 Colt BP loads and horses.
