Those were group sizes

1 1/4 inch on low charges which tightens to 1 inch on heavier ones

I was trying for faster than my 405s for more predictability range poa.
My 405s at trap door velocity my 50 yard zero means hold 6 inch lower for 80 yards zero

I think there's a discussion (joke possibly) in your use of "only" Ian.

The relationship between interior ballistics and external,is for me pretty dang important. Not sayin they are or aren't important,as for status quo.Just sayin I haven't seen the relationship in print.

Start a thread on it and we'll see....;)

Thank you for the reports, Roger, that's pretty impressive for plain-based bullets, in fact VERY impressive! Way better than I ever did with the big bores without paper jackets.

Yeah, we did this w a 308 plain based ar10 heavy bullet but that bullet had a big base band to upset (a lot of protection) and it did ok, my 405 gr Lyman 45-70 loads are trippin around 1400 fps max! And they work but that's a big bullet and still goin slow.

Not a lot done w light and fast and I'm glad that it worked. To be honest I could have dumped my reloads on the ground in a misorganized fashion and loaded them all up the same. They all printed in the same part of the target shooting nearly identicle groups. I'll prob load them on the light end for practice and the heavu end for killin

Don't be afraid to go with an even slower powder. 4805, Varget, and H335 can all do some good things in 45-70 with top end loads. Pressure curve and max pressure also can be very beneficial with plain based bullets.

Face it, a Marlin 1895 is easy to load for. Mine isn't picky at all, it seems to shoot almost any load well.

My 22inch and my guide gun both were a one powder gun. What bullet did you want to use? Ok so if that's the only powder you have and that's the bullet you want to use ok that's fine how much recoil can you handle? Ok that's fine just settle there.

They were both literally just shooting whatever however you wanted to shoot just fine.

My 22 inch I just quit shooting my ladder loads due to recoil and my 18 inch gun today just shot til I could see my results were all the same. So easy to load for

My dads Henry 45-70 not so much. Tried h-4895 and it sucked, tried 4320 and it sucked, tried unique it sucked, tried imr4198 and I couldn't believe it sucked, tried h4198 and it sucked. By this point and time my dad and I prob needed Vicodin to get through another ladder test of powder ha.

We finally went online and found people praising Alliant 10x so we bought a lb of that and he got some groups that matched my open sight 60 yard work 22 inch marlin.I still don't think it's good but he's happy w it and prob could knock anything worth hunting using a 45-70 down

H322 is what I used on a couple bears with a 420 plain base.

I have also used Benchmark with good results.

Like I said, my rifle isn't picky. I do generally stick with 24 gr of 2400 as it is accurate and recoil is manageable.

Well today I installed the new marlin front sight as the one they had on the gun originally was way too tall.

Installed this and checked it w the micrometer each side and seemed well centered

Shot two shells w two diff elevations on the rear ladder and picked the one I liked the best as far as impact

50 yards I shot a 1 1/4 inch group and at 70 yards open sight same poa and poi I shot a 1 1/2 inch group. Damn I’m happy w this gun and 350 gr plainbased bullets
