.460 G&A?

After the gun show yesterday, we went to a nearby gun shop which always has a lot of high end long guns, never seen a pistol in their store, but never see ANY Ars or other tacticool BS either, so it's good.

In there was a Ruger #1 in .460 G&A, which I googled and it appears to be the .404 Jefferey necked to take a .458 bullet.

I have a .458 Win mag, but have been kind of wanting a "normal" weight rifle in it. Not planning to shoot full house stuff, but stiff .45-70 level loads would be nice in a rifle like this.

Other than dies, any reason this would be better or worse than a .458? My .458 is fun, but it's a huge, heavy rifle, nice on a bench, but the idea of hunting with it isn't really in the cards.

i don't think they give 404 Jeff brass away.
458 can be made from pretty much any of the belted cases you got kicking around.
but weight in the field is something else, personally i'd just google up a number-1 in 45-70 and notify my FFL.

No experience with either .458 win mag, or the G&A- just some thoughts.

The Jeffery case has a powder capacity about 25% higher than the .458 win mag. When the goal is 45/70- type ballistics, this significant increase in capacity is not helpful. The brass for the G&A will also be more expensive, harder to come by and more difficult to convert from other cartridges in a pinch.
I would let it go, and rather keep looking.

If you are going to hunt with a .458 you are supposed to be well equipped with a gun hauler so you are not worn out as you carry the rest of the gear.... So now you want an even heavier rifle ?
Why not just get a 50 Alaskan ? 500 grainers at 1850 fps with 30% less powder and a 8 pound rifle

Well, if you can source brass and you like the idea, you'd probably be the only guy at the range with one. And your testosterone level would not be in question. Beyond that, it's your call.

Testosterone level not in question is a new one. Very accurate description.

I wonder if that was a prototype or improvement for the 460 Ruger ?

Read and ad for a 460 Ruger for sale once , "target destroyed, shooter recovering expected to survive, mild concussion".

I shoot a Ruger #1H that used to be a .458 Win Mag but I had it rechambered to .460 Weatherby Mag. Brass is the biggest consideration when considering a big bore that uses big brass. I had acquired some .460 ammo/brass before the rifle but expensive dies and cases that cost dollars not cents is a factor. As a caster it is easy to make what I call plinking rounds for the big ones. I started with the Lee 500 gr. RNL and worked up a nice shooting load that is like a 45-70 type load. I got the load from an old Lyman manual, 20 grs. to 28 grs. of Unique behind the 500 gr. makes a great shooting load. I also shoot 45-70 and .458 SOCOM so I have tried some of the other lighter bullets I use for them in the .460.

In the pic from L to R:

.460 with 500 gr. FMJ
.460 with 300 gr. JHP
.460 with Lee 500 gr. bullet coated with Hitek and GC'd
.223 round for comparison.
