Got my Grandson for a week. He is a die hard Fisherman.
We had little to no Winter so the Crappie are Already Spawning 30 to 45 days early.
I cast my own jigs and tie them.

He is a rod casting wizard with his P.J. Mask Rod.

He was fishing with a white/white jig about 8 inches under the bobber in 12 inches of water.
I looked over and his bobber was gone. Told him to set the hook and he Missed!!!!

He cast back in the same spot. About 6 foot off the bank and the big girl ate it immediately. Measured just under 16 inches, but a bit of her tail had rubbed off from fanning the nest in the Rocks.

Only fish he bagged that afternoon as he was busy running the net for me. What a Whopper!!!

THAT is one healthy crappie! NICE WORK!

White jigs have been uber-effective for crappie since forever. Crappie fishing with UL tackle is way fun!
Its pretty rare for White to be the color on these waters. He got a few after work with black/chartreuse this afternoon. I have to send him back to his folks tomorrow. Hopefully we can squeeze one more short trip in.

Crappie fishing with UL tackle is way fun!

anything with a UL rod and 4lb test is awesome. crappie, bluegill, perch, rock bass, trout, small and largemouth, catfish, walleye...i even got some small pike and musky. the largest i got was a 29" flathead in the Juniata River (Bedford County). i had a native brown trout (Spring Creek, Centre County) that was 26 1/4" and you could fit your two fists in its mouth and still have room for 2 fingers. it took me about 45 minutes to land it. it took me about an hour to revive the trout, at the time, it still might be, Spring Creek was contaminated and the fish were too. the fish commission then label it a no kill/ release only creek. boy did it have trout!!!

but dang, that kid has a BIG crappie!!!! :eek:

I lit them up this morning. Caught so many fish that I turned all the females loose and only put males on the stringer. Except for the 2 pictured. A big girl at 15 3/4 next to a 10 1/2. Bot gals swallowed the hook and were in bad shape. 23 males to go with. 25 is the limit here and thats enough to clean anyhow.
Males were stupid shallow making beds for the spawn.

looks like they both got their tails pretty beat up so they might have dropped some of their eggs on a bed already.
