7mm mold suggestions

One the guys that frequents our little local range asked me the other day if I knew much about casting, I told him that I don't everything, though I do get respectable results, along with just wasting good lead and other components. He wanted to pick my brain over casting for 7mm Rem Mag. Being that I never casted for any 7mm rifle round I offered to look around and see what was was out there. I see that RCBS, Lee, Lyman, Saeco, has their traditional offerings, along with Accurate with a heavy 195gr PB designed for powder coat. He did not know the twist rate, looked a bit bewildered at the question, rifle looked fairly new, I am going to hedge my bets and say likely 1 in 9, 9.5 or 10, somewhere in there.

Appreciate any input on experiences with cast and the 7mm RM.

Many thanks,

Michael

I agree 100% on all points, they all crossed my mind when I was presented with the question. But then again, it's not my rifle. I can help him sort out powders, but in regards to what mold(s) would be a better, one over another, I haven't a clue.

Handloader Magazine published an "Annual" in the past, and one of those had an article on cast in the 7mmRemMag. IIRC, best groups were with Unique. Its been several years since I saw that particular magazine, but I didn't throw it out. This was probably 25 years ago, so before powder coating, and with off the shelf bullet designs of the time. I shot some through mine, but wasn't a priority, so got back burnered.

Never in a 7 mag, but cast works great in 7x57. I will say tha Lee 135 grain round nose has been a pretty good shooter in several rifles for me, but I wouldn't choose it for a hunting bullet.

The 136 gr. Thor is rapidly becoming one of my favorites in the 7X57mm :

The Lyman Manual lists bullets and loads for the 7RM. All use gas checks. The heaviest bullet and optimal powder for it is a 162gr bullet with 33.6-42gr IMR 4198 with the highest load having a MV = 2526 fps. There are loads with a MV less than 1800fps. In the comments, the 119gr bullet gave the best performance. Accuracy for all bullets was poor with a MV above 1800 fps. The test rifle was a Remington with a 9-1/2" twist and the alloy was Lyman #2. For the heavier bullets,
