A Little 45-70 testing

A friend of mine in Tucson had one in his younger days long before we met, for giggles he would take some/a few 300gr HPs every now then and run them full throttle out his 460 and bring it along on prairie dog hunts. Two things he mentioned about the combination, 1- 300gr HPs were not designed to hold together at what he claimed was 2900-3000fps. 2- that plus the mass/volume of the bullet coupled with the velocity made one heck of mess with smaller critters. Tony mentioned that he once shot an adult porcupine at about 50yds with it, it just took it apart, more so than any PD meeting a 50gr from his Swift.

One other 460 story he shared, one time he and a trap shooting buddy were out plinking and Tony had his 460 with him, keep in mind his buddy rarely shot rifle. When getting ready to shoot it, he kept throwing up to his shoulder as if he was shooting trap, Tony told him, that it is was not a good idea to approach shooting the 460 that way, the suggestion was brushed aside. The gentleman had a cap on with one of those long bills, anyway he throws the rifle to his shoulder and fires, he was introduced to recoil, stayed on his feet and did not drop the rifle. His cap on the other, the bill had been completely collapsed by the scope like an accordian, or aluminum can. Tony figured it was only thing between his buddy and a trip to the ER at best, for a bunch of stitches.
