Another plain base .30 cal.

I love plain basing .30 cal. moulds ( as many of you have seen of late ).

You'll often times end up with a fantastically accurate cast bullet to be shot at sedate velocities. No gas check to buy and install and the plain base design is easy on the shoulder , ears, and pocket book.

Today's mould was a .30 cal, NOE 169 gr. double cav. gas check design.

I used my drill press along with my 5/16" ( .312 " dia. ) HSS , drill bit after a judicious amount of checking and double checking to see if the entry point for the bit into the mould was perfectly perpendicular.

Once the work was done and the mould was hot, I poured one from the front cavity and one from the rear cavity. 176.0 grs. and 176.1 grs.

That's close enough for me.

The g/c shanks in both cavities have been removed.

Doesn't take long to accumulate some nice plain base .30 cal. cast bullets with this one :

That turned out especially nice for a drill job, Ben, you're perfecting the art!

Ben, I am going to remove the check only. I do not have the courage to HP one.

I also wonder if a PB HP is a good idea. I guess the right alloy would expand at PB speeds.

Malcolm,

Here is a SAECO # 353 that Buckshot HP'd for me many years ago.
It is a plain base bullet. As long as the velocities are kept " sane ", it is a great performer. Super accurate and explosive out of my 358 Win. rifles. The solid weighs 180 grs. , the HP weighs in at 168 grs. The HP is a fine bullet in the 357 Mag. and the 38 Special.

Buckshot HP'd a 311413 for me a number of years back.
Wasn't long after that he announced that he would not
HP any more pointed bullets. He did a beautiful job on the
mold, just like he did on all of his HP molds, but to do
a HP job on a pointed bullet must have been a real
challenge.
