Buckshot's New Colt Python

Rick Tunell came by the place today with his recently-received Colt Python x 6". This is one of the new-series Pythons that Rick ordered and waited for since mid-2020. He took it out for a test-drive Friday, and all went well and smoothly--AND ACCURATELY.

It has the same form of walnut grip set found on the original I-frame Pythons. Rick hasn't had the grips off the frame yet, so dunno if these repros have re-kindled the V-spring actions or not. (I have been waiting none-too-patiently to confirm this info). The finish on his revolver is flawless, the trigger strokes are VERY Colt-like, and lock-up is like a bank vault. I may need to get one of these.

Jeez, now I'm second-hand jealous. You tell that scoundrel I said "neener".

Will do, sir.

I am just happy that Rick GOT THE THING. I had no idea what the status was concerning Colt and its products since CZ-USA snagged them. HOLY MOTHER OF PEARL--look at Colt's website--the Anaconda is back, as well as some snubnose Cobras. This might get expensive.

Company finally succeeds to mismanage themselves right into bankruptcy, name gets bought, new ownership immediately starts producing the iconic models in quality form, proceeds to make profit and satisfy customers. FN did same for Winchester. Here's hoping Ruger will do the same for Remington and Marlin.

Too right, Ian. FN or Miroku Winchesters are very nice. Rick's Python is SUPERB. I don't mean to gush here, but this has me kinda excited.

I had heard of a couple problems from the first batch out of the chute. I hope those issues were taken care of with subsequent runs. Don't let the title of this youtube make you think this guy is an angry crank, he is not...it's just a short concise video mentioning the issues from early purchasers.

Winelover,

I bought mine in June 1994, an Anaconda in .45 Colt, and I would not part with it. Aside from the sentimental value (I bought it on my late father's FFL), it's an excellent shooter, good heft and just plain fun to shoot. My understanding is that the thirty-year specimens are upsized versions of the King Cobra, and the current production models are upsized Python-patterns. I could have that wrong, however. I figured, with the wisdom of all my then-24 years, that a man should have a Colt in .45, because, well, it's a Colt in .45.

My $.02

It is nice that Colt has seen fit to reintroduce there revolver line. I'm hopeful and think that CZ's management will be a good thing here. Even if they did buy Colt for the overseas military sales market. I have some thing of a love hate relationship with the Python. It's the first pistol that I could tell you the make and model of just by looking at it as a kid. But about the time I turned 21 and started buying hand guns a friend of mine ordered a Python and some custom work. An action job, so it went thru the Custom Shop. This was an order the pistol thru a dealer and then wait and wait some more deal. Finally the dealer calls and says his pistol is in. We go down to the dealers to pick it up and the first words out of the dealers mouth when we walked in were "I don't know about this one." It was horrible. The barrel wasn't squared up, the action was the worst of any Python I've handled and the finish was splotchy. My friend after a years plus wait refused delivery on it. Turns out Colt and the union were feuding. Soured me on Colts for a long time and it wasn't even mine. I do own a 4 inch Python (1966 or 68) and a rimfire 4 inch Diamondback so I must have gotten over it. It does seem that when there were a few teething problems with the reintroduced Pythons that Colt stood behind them and made short work of fixing the glitch. It's a good sign when a company answers there customer base and actually offers this base what they want.

I bought one of the mid-90s Anacondas in 44 Magnum x 6" barrel. It was a dandy. Its lockwork was like that of the Colt Mk III/MK V-series revolvers, just a bit bigger. Simple, robust, and a little unrefined. When the Big Snakes went out of print, the pricing soared and one of the guys at work offered some huge dollars for the example, and I sold it. By that time I also had the 5.5" Redhawk, and one 44 Magnum at a time for a guy with girls still in school was sufficient.

I have some interest in the Cobra series--the Python--and the Anaconda. Before I plunk any cash down though, I want a better idea of action/lockwork designs and durability.
