Cheap .30 cal. plinking

Keeping my grandson in accurate .30 cal. plinking ammo keeps me busy.
This mould is my friend, The Lee 100 gr. 311 plain base RN.
I think Ian also uses this one ?

It shoots real well with 3.8 grs. of TiteGroup out of several 30-30's.
I size to .311" dia.
No gas checks and very little powder ( precious & pricey right now ) .

I cast these in about 2.5 hours :

Nice!
I also have this mould, have tried it in .308 and 30-06. I have, however, never achieved great accuracy. I suspect I have used a bit too much powder. Thanks for the inspiration to try it again.

If it is shot at 1050 - 1100 fps, it is accurate.
1,300 fps + has not worked well for me in any rifle.

I use 3.2 grains of bullseye with this bullet in my 30-06. Not really a 100 yard load, without rezeroing my scope. But it shoots close to the scope out to 25 yards. This load will ring a 6” plate at 50-60 yards if I hold to the top of the plate.

Joshua,

It shoots well, you just can't " hot rod " it.
Thanks for your input.

I used to shoot that bullet out of a Stevens Model 44 .32-20 with Unique and black powder. 900 to 1,150 fps was great. A case full of 3fg Swiss would put 3 in a raggedy hole at 25 yards, 1,130 fps. Then I'd use a string trimmer pull thru cleaner with a spit patch and was good for 3 more. I'd kill 5 squirrels with 5 shots and always hit within a 1/4" of the eye if I missed the eye.

Now I have three .25-20's and the .32-20's went to friends. One more .25-20 on the want list, a Savage Model 23, then I'd have a single shot, a pump, a lever , and a bolt.

My go-to "bunny" load for .30-30 is that bullet over 3.4 grains of Titegroup. Just barely subsonic even in my 24" Savage rifles, the load is quiet and accurate. I cast them soft (9 to 11 BHN) and sometimes flat-point them with my Lyman 45. BLL, powder coat, and conventional lube all work well nut I prefer powder coat for when shooting through a suppressor.

I have half a ceegar box of RCBS 30-90-CM bullets I am going to load into 7.62x39 cases with small primer pockets and shoot the from a scoped Rossi single shot. Some small powder charge of fast burning powder will do the trick.

A young friend brought his 6 year old precocious little brother over to learn about and help with maple syrup making. Because, purely by coincidence, the roof over the syrup arch happens to line up with the 28 yard stump, and the 80, 160, and 210 yard rails. So we sat the little guy down with a twenny two. I think he'd love to shoot the "Big Gun". When I was 6 I think I'd have soiled my Oshkosh B'Gosh bib overalls if someone let me plink with reduced loads in a "real rifle".

I find that loads using this Lee 100 gr. RN bullet at " Sedate Velocities " make great training loads for my 12 yr. old grandson.

Fresh target from today`s range trip. I assembled some quick-and-dirty loads with the Lee 311-100-R, FC brass and rem LPP. I decided to try 5 grs of Vectan Ba10, wich is in the Bullseye ballpark.
Shot at 66 yds, a 5- shot 1 3/4in group. I`ll try to reduce the load a bit further. A little better accuracy, and this would be perfectly suited to breaking clay targets at 50-70 yds from field positions.

UUUmmmm, looks like you're definitely headed in the right direction.
Good fun and saving $$$$$. Hard to beat that combination.
