So, the local pawnshop brought a Savage 340 in 30-30 to the gun show this weekend. He had $300 on it, but prob get it for $250 or less. Looked to be in good shape. I have to many 30-30s and way to many other projects to start on it, or it would have come home with me.

I know a lot of you guys like this one. If interested, let me know.

I only gave $200 for mine , but it's just a plain Jane 49' 325C with a White-something peep sight . I wouldn't mind having another but I'm not sure how I'm going to move what I have to move as is .....

Mine was a breeze to get a load for whether I wanted a 90 plinker or a full tilt hunting load .

Ya just can't get hurt with one of these .

they have an odd magnetism once you own one and happen to be a cast bullet shooter.
I'm starting to consider re-barreling my stevens 325C into a 375 super magnum, not a heart breaking deal since I have the 340A to console me over the loss.

Unfortunately my 325 is picky. It dislikes PC bullets. I only shot 2 out of it. And it took 20 greased bullets to get it back shooting. My last 340 just loved PC bullets.

I've been searching all the local pawn shops for several months looking for one. No luck so far. I did find one in 222 but I already have a Remington 722 for that. I will eventually find one.

I would really like to find a Remington 788 30/30 but they are scarce.

I found a near pristine Rem. 788 , 30-30 at the Birmingham Gun Show a month or so ago.

Guy was asking $550.
I was afraid to start a discussion on the rifle as I feared I'd end up owning another Rem 788.

My Dad had a Savage 340 .30-30 that I have now... I've got an extremely accurate Savage 342 (.22 Hornet) I've had since I was a kid. BUT.......

My friend from childhood has a pristine Model 788 in .30-30..... At least it used to be... Jes bore it to .38-55. The mags been modified to feed the 'fat boy'. Like all Jes's stuff it is superbly accurate! My ol' buddy is a dealer and wheels and deals... He has hunted a lot with the .38-55 and knowing him he'll trade it.....

I gave him fair warning what would happen if I wasn't offered that 788 .38-55 first!!

definitely let us know.
the 375 I'm looking at doing is the shortened version of the 375 win so I would imagine the slight mag tweak [as well as possibly a block to shorten the length] might be part of the changeover I'm contemplating

Brother_Love - I may regret this, as I thought about going by and offering $200 on it today (shop is only 2 blocks from my office!!!). But, If you want this one, give me a $$$ that will work considering shipping and FFL transfer cost. I am not opposed to buying it and shipping it to you if you desire and can get it for the price you want, all things considered. Why I posted it here. (I almost expected to see Ben post he was gonna come up to the big city and snatch it today!!!)

And if you guys keep posting all the good stuff about it, I may just buy it anyway, just because! I cast for everything, so it would be perfect. AND I have a 340C in 222 Rem, been hot rodded for bench rest ($500 aftermarket stock - posted pics here earlier - acraglas bedded, the HUGE butt-ugly third silver wood screw. recoil pad.) I love it. Pd $200 for it! $40 side scope mount and $200 Leupold VX-1! Intend it to be my crow/cat/fox/yote/fun paper puncher gun - with zero recoil! yet to zero the new scope...

And damn you guys and your good reviews and enabling comments... I need that 340 30-30 like I need a hole in my head, but.... $200 just may burn a hole in my pocket tomo! oh well/shoulder shrug/ho hum. IS why I come here, and it IS only $ - sure can't take it with me! And some good son (5!)/grandkid (eventually) will get it anyway. Just dang... Isn't $200 basically just beer money?!?

I got my Savage 340 30-30 at a LGS for $159
The outside of her is a little worn but the bore is beautiful.
It also came with Lyman peep sights to boot!

they are more like 300-350 here if you happen to ever see one.
I got the 340 then some time later the wife seen the 325 and a Ruger tang safety in 250 Sav. Ackley on a craigslist type ad.
I met with the guy and talked him down on both rifles and some powder he had.
initially I really only wanted the Stevens,,,, until I seen the Ruger.
It was a quality job.
pull the barrel, cut a thread, face off the surfaces, and re-chamber to the Ackley chambering [the way it would have been done in Parkers shop]

I'm fairly certain it had been done in the early-mid 70's and then stuck in the guy's dads closet after some initial load workup, especially after I seen the powder canisters, low AI brass count, the brass containers, and load details he had with him.
