That is one heck of a collection of files for working out machining operations. In my "Machining Stuff" bookmark file now.

We don't do knurls,"under power"...

Simple as that.I use a scissor type vs pressure. It gets cranked down, approximately the # of turns to engrave rollers....subject to adding a half turn,in or so.

But the lathe is in neutral....

If you really look at how knurls and their attendant tooling functions,it's self feeding...up to a point. So,leave lathe in neutral and engage the tool.

Start rolling in the carriage twds the headstock, without power...feeling how the knurl is self feeding,R to L.I turn the chuck by hand, with the assistance of the chuck wrench....all the while rolling the carriage by hand.No math..no calcs on feed.

To the point that, once master'd...you can reverse the feed and go L to R....and back again, cleaning up the grooves.
