Greatest Carry Revolver Ever

My search for an ideal carry sixgun may have come to an end. On a whim, I picked up an early Smith and Wesson 2" Model 64. I installed a set of vintage Westinghouse House Micarta grips and a Tyler T-Grip. It carries high, tight and concealed and does not drag my pants to half mast in a Simply Rugger Sourdough holster. My favorite load is a full charge wadcutter (H&G 241/3.5BE). Around town to avoid over penetration it stays loaded with the Speer Gold Dot 135 grain short barrel +P load.

All most all of my reloading these days is for the 45ACP, 45 Colt, 38 Special and 357 Magnum rounds. Model 64 small.jpg

Charles,

Since you load a lot of .45 ACP and .45 Colt, you really ought to try the 452-423 mould. I think you'll like it, maybe even love it.;)

Thank you Don, I do have some experience with that bullet and like it in both calibers.

Am so proud of one of my boys.He gets a super clean #10 Smith fixed sight,HB from Bud's....and keeps the factory stocks. He calls the Tyler factory and orders their T grip adapter. There's a reason for these. If you've never shot one, don't wait.I've machined an awful lot of custom grips for handguns over the last 40+ years.Nice grips, beautiful woods, yadayada. But still don't have quite the pleasentry of the Tyler T....as always, just sayin.BW

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I'm not far off from your choice Chagar. Smith Bodyguard, Tyler adapter, factory stocks. Works great, carries easy in a pocket, boot or pretty much anywhere.

Resembles my 80's vintage Model 60 (38 Spl).

Far cry, from what I would call "Greatest Carry Revolver Ever". I do not want a spur hammer for carry....notice the Mircata grips, I fashioned, after Bianchi's rubber shrouded offering. Horrendous DA trigger.....unable to measure on my RCBS gauge. I carry, daily, from the time I wake up....till bedtime. Too heavy for the caliber. Rather, a 642, is in my Mika pocket holster. If and when, I want more power, it's a Ruger 357 LCR. Couple of ounces, heavier than the 642 with better sights and still fits the aforementioned holster......probably is the Greatest Carry Revolver Ever.

In fact, the model 60 is my last choice for carry and I have many to choose, from. Current use is as a extra house gun.

Every one of the options is lighter than the Model 60, empty.

Speaking of holsters, I do not normally wear a IWB holster.....my kitchen chair backs are all scratched up from the initial usage. Fine for town or working around the property, just not for sitting around the house.

Wow, my everyday carry looks really bad compared to yours, less than half the finish and checkering wearing off. Only has about 3000 rounds thru it and most of those 32 Longs. Grips are Herrett's Detective's and used with Don Hume pocket holster. Portly gentlemen don't wear holsters every waking hours, but I carry this as soon as I put my pants on in the morning. Weights 12 oz. with wood grips and 6 rounds of magnums loaded.

Picture is several years old. The 642, I usually carry, has shiny areas on SS cylinder and anodized finish wore away on the frame edges. Particularly, along the sighting plane. Worst frame corrosion is between the grip and the recoil shield. I tried to show it in this picture.

I'm a southpaw, that's why the right side, is the worst. Lack of attention, after working outside in the Arkansas heat and humidity. After mowing and weed wacking, the leather backing of the IWB holster is pretty damp from perspiration.....I remove it when I'm done, but fail to wipe the revolver down. My bad.

Nice gun Charles - and good to have you posting. I have the same gun with 4" HB, but Pachmeyer grips on
it. Good shooter, but with the bbl, not so handy for CCW. I have the Tyler's on several
other guns, mostly Colts which desperately need it.

I have the same gun as RicinYakima, but in .38 Spl. Kept topped up with HP version of 358429, pure lead at
158 gr over 5.0 Unique, the only load I found which shoots to the sights and opens reliably at normal
velocities. Only carry it sometimes, but the wife carries it a lot around our acreage. A firm believer that
you have exactly as much security as you brought with you. They are really nice to carry,
sooooo light with Ti cylinder, lined Al bbl! But you pay the price in recoil, but still a great gun.

I shot a friend's .32 Mag version once, put six shots as fast as I could pull the trigger at 12 yds into a group you
could cover with a playing card, at POA. Works for me! Big smile as I handed it back to the owner.

Bill,

That is the classic .38 Special load.

Yeah, I know it is a common one. I tried all the fancy, high dollar self defense loads (at about $20 for 20) and
none shot near the sights or into anything that would be sensibly called a group at 15 yds. Finally, tried my own
load, above, and first try got 5 in a 2" group right at POA at 12 yds. Then shot it into wet phone books, good
expansion. Done looking.

There is (or at used to be, not sure if current) a std Win and Rem HP lead SWC load which is probably similar, have
not tried it out in a snub.

When I first got a CTC laser grip sight, I would two hand it hard down on the shooting bench, not aiming, just putting the dot on the center of the black. I would shoot sub-1 inch groups at 25 yards. However just the blood pumping through your hands makes the little thing really hard to hold, so 3 inches is about the best I can do shooting it for real. All the little Ti's were amazingly accurate.

Bill, those two and Federals are available, but nobody carries them, too low tech. Mostly it is used by cops who carry revolvers for back-up and had older cops guide them in proper ammo, JHP is not it. You can order it off the internet if nothing else.

I have the same 358429 HP mould, and while the 2 bullets on the right are from a 359640 HP mould, it does show the type of expansion you can get fired from a snubbie when you keep the antimony content in your alloy low.
