Help me choose a new plain base .30cal mold!

I just ordered the 2 cavity PB. I shoot at speeds now that do not require checks. I get good accuracy and my 67 yr old shoulder appreciates it!

Congrats! Pb is most enjoyable & shoulder friendly even for younger bucks.

The 315 would be a good solid choice especially in the cartridges you listed...definitely go with the PB/GC mold....plus it's easier to cast than the 299...I haven't used any powders slower than RX 7 with it yet.

The 299 can be finicky with the various nose sizes..if you choose the 299 I'd get the 314299 with the .304 nose ..it's been working great in the 30-06's and .308....a little harder to cast than the 315...I have used every powder from RD to 4350 with it and it's been a tack driver with all...the PB is crazy accurate out of my .308...I shot two more groups like these out of the .308 at 100 yds this morning but haven't taken a picture yet..

Dan. Why the .304" nose? I always thought a .301" nose was about perfect. Am I wrong here?...

Two reasons Walter ...one, if you cast with ACCOWW you're likely to get a .300 nose out of a NOE 311299, possibly a shy .301...two,the 299 is a bore rider...a .301 nose might be good for a brand new barrel with a good throat..none of mine are brand new...

The bore riders don't just ride on top on the lands but are slightly engraved by them...I can't prove it, but like Ben says "his guns prefer a bullet with at least a .302 nose"..my targets agree with his assessment...better yet when I got one with a .304 nose for a shot out 30-06, I found that it out shot one with a .302 nose in my milsurps and .308.

I recovered some of the plain based bullets shot at 100 yds that are in those targets I posted and found that they were engraved from the ogive to the base, no chance of tipping in the bore there...

Just got to be able to chamber the round...

The 315 being tapered on the other hand just plain fits anything...two entirely different bullets

Ya you'll end up with both eventually..or you'll be like me with all four..315 , 311299 , 312299 and 314299...PB & GC'ed

PS...I like Ben liked the 315 so much I bought a DC 315 PB in brass....I got mine from NOE..wished I had done the same thing and got one from Tom that was +.001 over Noe's on the bands...Dan

Dan,

The .302 " dia. nose works very well in many of my .30 cal. rifles.
Here is the NOE 311284 plain base ( that I removed the g/c shank out of ) with a .302" nose.
