High velocity cast .308 @ 500 yards

Decent spotting scopes start twice that and don't record.
My brother "bit the bullet" and bought a Leupold Mark IV a few years back. They are $2500 everywhere they are sold. He found a new one on Ebay for $1900 and grabbed it! I thought he was joking until out came the wallet and started typing....:eek::eek:
I'm glad he did though. We can spot bullet strikes on a 32"x34" steel plate at 1760 yards with it.

But did the Sony video camera zoom in like that or did you use the
Leupold scope with the camera?

Although the 315 didn’t perform well at 500, it was not all that bad at 100. A2F2497A-1CCC-46BF-A788-9A697F9A2E63.jpeg

Well done!

If the music was faded way down during the talking it would be perfection.

Very well done!

I would bet the 315 dropped off by 400 yards due to lower BC. That flat nose is a killer at longer ranges.

I have room to ramp up the speed though. I'll try that next. The 100 yard target wasn't all that bad. Better than the xcb anyhow.

You guys did an awsome job with that load. Thanks for inviting me here to this form. Cant wait to get on testing these powders for the 3006.

For 06 I would go slower. Something like RE22 would be a good place to look.

or use fillers.
there is a lot of room in the 0-6 case the 308doesn't have.
the loads will transfer over but the pressures don't and by the time the pressure does you have gone too far.
it is pretty much a direct changeover with the faster powders, but not quite right with the rifle powders.

I didn't take the time to really work out middle ground with the '06, back when I had one. For years and years I hunted with a 2000 fps load, 39.5 grains of H4350 behind the Lee 312-185. Then I started paper-patching. Off the top of my head one load was 54 grains and the other was 59 grains, the powders were WW780 Supreme and RX-22, can't remember which was which. Those powders were chosen due to case fill @ desired velocity range so I could use just the correct amount of granulated buffer behind the PP bullet. 26-2700 fps was the operating range. If you want to get the most out of the '06 that's how I'd recommend doing it.

One caveat, follow jacketed book loads for this kind of work. For lubricated, cast bullets, don't go below the published minimum jacketed starting loads of the medium/slow rifle powders for the equivalent bullet weight, and even that is pushing things a little on the pop/fizzle side due to the lower engraving pressure of cast bullets.

Thank-you very much. Has anyone played with Superformance? Anythoughts for use in cast 3006? Its on the slower side as mentioned, 4 above Reloader 22. According to Hodgon when i called its a different type of reacting powder which stacks pressures without spikes and case fill doesnt affect the burn. It uses some additives similiar to CFE series. So far its the only powder I was able to get a hold of locally

Thanks Ian I'm making a list of powders you and others mentioned. As far as case fillers Im reading up on it here. Great stuff guys. Im hoping to try them out on a NOE HTC 135gr/153gr mold and also the 174 Elco

I played with it, great theory but my results were dismal. Get some and try it, I'd like someone to prove me wrong because it should be a fantastic powder. The spherical granules are an assortment of sizes, which is how they get the "progressive" burn rate.

Thanks for all the compliments guys. It was a fun day. I’ve been wanting to try this for sometime and had just never got around to doing it. The two loads I didn’t show both got a couple hits. VERY inconsistent. You could see them twisting and turning at the end.
The XCB bullet @ 2260 I think was just barely enough. My ballistics program showed it staying super sonic out to 525. How accurate is this? Not sure.
As a side note. I posted the same vid over on the other site. Almost 100 views and only one comment!
Then I remembered that I gave a shout out for this website! Lol.
I’m waiting for them to close the thread!
Actually it's getting some attention over there now. I saw it last night and posted in it and i see several more are there now.
Very nice video...music and all! Very professional. As i said over there, i use imr 4350 and the xcb bullet in my 12 twist .308 at 2450 fps. chronoed with excellent accuracy at 100 yds., but haven't tried for linear accuracy at further distance....i have been officially re-motivated lol. Thanks for that!

One thing i didn't mention was if i'm in a hurry to shoot...i use straight ww and ht @ 465* for 1 hr. and water drop. I'll have about 27 bhn in 3 days and they shoot as well then as if i wait 3 weeks or 3 months. I've even shot them at high velocity after only 2 days and had the same results. 1" and less with weighed and 1 1/2" or less with unweighed @ 100 yds.
Heat treating ww has worked well for me in those situations where you may be waiting for a "certain" alloy mix to age harden.
Especially when i have a new mold and can't wait to load and shoot lol. I was initially surprised to find ht ww could take the speed and shoot that well. Top it off with Ben's Red or 3 coats of BLL and i'm ready for the range very quickly after casting.

Can't wait for more of your range results! Lol, it gives me hope for mine. That 30 xcb turned out to be a fine whitetail bullet too btw.....love it.

35 shooter. happy to re-motivate you! It was a fun experiment. I have more work to do. Stay tuned for more results and new videos!
