I had data I swear I did ......... Now I can't find it .
45-70 , 45-500@531.5 gr ready to load , goal 1050-1100 fps .
Unique , 4198 ........
I looked at the old Lyman 43 , nothing over 405 ..... Only Unique data .
Hornady lists a 500 jacketed at 2.75 and 3" oal so being stick with a 2.550 that's not overly helpful .
Ken Waters has a 518 gr cast listed ......too long of course , but lists and identifies H4831 with mag primers at contact/no compression load volumes .
I4350 was mentioned but , sans data , not being as accurate or consistent .
Being a thinking sort and having wondered out in the weeds with 4350 in a 200 gr x39 and in the 358 Win .
I hedge a little here , among other things all of the data in weight class is are for bullets .350-.550 further out of the case . I first have about a 30% loss of case and from past mucking about in the weeds Im questioning if the resulting space loss leaves enough space ...... 25 gr of 4350 got me 1700 fps in the x39 @200 gr and 2100 fps with 39.5 gr in a 358 Win @250 gr .
The Waters data for 4831 says 57.0 gr under the 518 gr bullet while I haven't tried anything in that vain , I don't think over 38-40 gr will fit . I'm wondering if that's enough left to get me in the desired speed window .
4350 might be better with the reduced case , but how likely is it to peak and go over ? This is the realm of too slow to get hurt unless we're launching bullets that are right at the top of maybe over the nominal top weights . I also don't want to have some unfortunate event , SEE or rebounding shock waves . If that's a possibility with the old school slow slow powders .
4198 has 2 tier load data but again I have no idea how much to back off for the space change .......
