I bought this Contender barrel today.

.222 Remington.

I've got several good bullet moulds, ( 225438, 225415, 225462 ) to use with this one.
I also have a nice FC III , .22 cal. gas check maker that makes fine checks that will not come off once they go through a sizer.
However, I don't plan on " hot - roding " this one.

Pretty versatile.
I'm thinking right now about some cast loads in the 1,600 fps speed zone.

That will be more than any critter 50 pounds and less would want poking through the chest or shoulders.

My exact thoughts.
I already have a 22 K Hornet barrel.
The Hornet brass is fairly fragile.
The 222 Rem. brass is another story entirely.

Should be fun.

The 222 is awesome! I have a 722 Remington that wil stack the RCBS cast bullets on top of each other. Ben, you will love that barrel.

Eliminates a need for the hornet. Brass is way more durable. Loads will be easy to find .

Good choice

Brad,

You're definitely RIGHT.
I may eventually sell my K-Hornet barrel.

Nice Find. I thought you already had a .222 Rem in the Contender but then I remembered it was in the Sako

Yes, SAKO.

Reminds me to get the SAKO out this spring and do some shooting with it.

Ben, would be interested in the twist. I am thinking that in all
probability, it will be a 1-14, but a 1-12 would be better.

Another CB Contender shooter!

That 222 barrel looks to be identical to my .218 B which has a 12'' twist. It shoots very nice five shotters at fifty with the RCBS 225-55-SP and IMR 4198. I also know where there are a couple of triple deuces, a Remington 722 and a Sako Vixen HB varminter but have never tried cast in either one.

Ben, you should never store contender barrels to close together. They will multiply like rabbits. I got so ate up with them at one time I had no less than twenty barrels and a half dozen frames.
I had never messed with the Herrett cartridges too much. Well you guessed it, I have both 30 and 35 now.
I honestly can't tell you how many I have now, but way less than I did years back.
I would tinker around with them and get them to shoot. Then shoot matches with them until I shot a 40x40. After that I would get bored and move on to the next one. I kept the easiest ones to shoot and the ones I had the most time in.
7TCU is a dandy cartridge and easy to work with. I must have had every bad one in two states through my hand at some time or another before I found one that would shoot.
I never played with the 222, though I always wished I had. The 10" barrels never tripped my trigger up until the past few years.
The 223 is obnoxious to say the least.
I would think the 222 would respond better.

My barrel arrived.
The bore looks pristine.
The bore is soaking in " Old Time Hoppes " tonight.
We'll see tomorrow morning what a clean white cotton patch looks like when it is pushed through the bore.

I'm a happy camper.

Any idea how old that barrel is? When did they stop making octagon barrels?
