Indian Cave

some places have been relaxing that rule due to deer numbers ruining the place.

those caves remind me of some of the ones down in Lake Powell.
if your there when it isn't tourist season it can get awful quiet and downright spooky back in some of the little canyons.
you get the feeling like you have to ask permission to catch any fish.

At large, whereabouts unknown.
Nebraska has a deer problem. Too many deer, and too few hunters. Interest in hunting has declined in the last decade, and permit sales are way down. Insurance companies are complaining about crop preditation, and about car & truck collisions with deer. There's a new program being developed for landowners to encourage allowing more access to private property for hunting & fishing.

There is not much vigor in opening one's private property to hunting and fishing access--at least not in California or other places with wide-open vicarious liability statutes. Tort reform legislation is GREATLY NEEDED in this country.

Lake Powell is a place Marie and I need to visit at a time other than Turkey Season. We were there for a week in July 2011, and enjoyed running the boat and dodging thunderstorms. I tried to meter fish, and didn't see much at all. With surface water temps of 79*, about all the water was good for was swimming. Like Death Valley in winter, most of the tourists we saw were from foreign countries--Europe predominated.

last time I went was the week before memorial day and things were barely open.
me and Little girl had the boat ramp, campground etc. to ourselves until the last day or so then a couple [by couple I mean a local couple] more people showed up for Friday.
and then about 6-7 boats come in for a walleye fishing tournament on sat and sun.
we decided to throw in the 30$ entry fee and almost won with 2 fish one was just above 4lbs. and the other close to 6 and took big fish money.
we done real good on the crappie that day and might have done better in the fishing tournament if we hadn't of been goofing off chasing those around for about 3 hours.

Crappie are a ton of fun to catch, no doubt about it. I have yet to hook a walleye at all--that was the principal reason for the Lake Powell trip. Those French college students sure had some skimpy swimsuits--when they wore them.

Few more pics from Sundays hunt/trek. No deer, but had a great time.

We did have major deer problem for many years. When they first opened the park to late season anterless shotgun slugs or muzzleloader you could literally not drive through the park without almost hitting 45 deer. It was obscene, they also allow archery either sex for a period. Turkey with archery only also. Some very fond memories archery/shotgun/muzzleloader hunting with my friends & family there. They also sprout obscene #'s of morel mushrooms each spring.

The deer #'s were reduced well, then blue tongue hit. Wiped out half our deer. The numbers are rebounding but not quite problematic. When it was really bad a couple farmers up north a bit lost 30k in crops in a short time. The one guy was issued 60 depredations tags. Any legal hunter could fill them for him. It was a grand time for me. It wasn't difficult to take 20-25 deer between sept-mid January for free or very low cost. I donated over 500lbs of fresh ground venison to local homeless feeder place several times.

Speaking of barbaric. I'm shocked the name is still Indian cave & not native cave or something. We are fortunate to have a good number of public access hunting opportunities here.

I'm no Ben or JW but here's me fonepix

good spot.
I'd be spending my time cruising that ridgeline above the river looking for tracks.

I'm still working on what an interpretive site is.
to me it means they ain't got a clue what they are looking at so your guess is as good as theirs.
it's pretty clear why people were hanging out there to me.
they had some sort of shelter, wood for fires, food.. and they didn't have to pay no taxes... pretty simple.

Walleye are kinda funny fish. Sometimes a decent fight, others, just a couple tugs and then float to the top. The are good to eat. FIL caught them on McConaughy & Johnson. I've caught a bunch on Johnson, mostly little. Ks isn't flat either! Indian (Mississippi culture) are all along the rivers in the plains states. Some are pretty neat and some of their settlements were pretty big.
Went from 65F last eve to 34 this morning so I'm staying inside.

Used to take Boy Scouts Camping there, and shot
Black powder with the muzzle loading club at
the range they had down there. Beautiful area.
