Even stranger for you Ian is that it is public land! Does Texas have such a thing?

I could shoot that far if I went to the NE national forest at Halsey. Odd to call it a forest when it is mostly grasslands and CCC planted trees. Only a 5 hour drive from here.

Public land....Hmmmmmm. Nope, not here. :( There are some coastal wetlands for bird hunting, but nothing I know of where a person could just go set up and shoot a rifle or handgun.

fiver, be careful what you say! My little town went from an agricultural hub of 35,000 to 125,000 in 20 years when it became known as a "retirement center" for CA retirees. Telling people they can shoot on public land is a bad thing!

we get a lot of new people here every year and they love it until they have 9' of snow piled up along their driveway, and in front of their house.
anyone looking to move here... the house across the road and the one next door to me are both empty.
the ones across the street made it through one winter, the one next door is empty again for the 4th time in 8 years.

a snow blower and a 4 wheeler with a plow will come in handy.

About 30 minutes from the house I could shoot over an area that you can actually see the curve . The magnetic N/S lay would teach you to lead a stationary target pretty quick . It's about 15 miles of empty beach .

"It's only money"....well yeah but,it can also be looked at as...."point A to B".How much do you want it?

300$ worth of M/C rubber lasts a weekend to any self respecting scratcher.

1K$ is the anty up to anything approaching tooling up a shop for even modest capital investments.

In contracting world,20...50....75K$ is or can be called in on any day, before lunch.Sumthin my darling, brilliant wife after all these years of being force fed projects/builds,STILL can't process.

So,what are you prepared to do?It's money...use it wisely.

Really ..If I used my cast bullet loads I would have too shoot...go find the bullet reload it ..shoot again...go find the bullet ..reload it shoot again..go find the bullet...well I guess you got the idea..I would eventually get it and me to 1760 yds

I did once try to hit a balloon I sent out off shore with a light offshore breeze..I used an old Lee Enfield with the volley sights...the rascal made it to the horizon with out a scratch....

So a .358 Win. shooting 250 RN at 2250 sighted for 150 yards drops how far at a mile? Oh, using a 2.5X scope. No Billy Dixon shots for me, I'm afraid.

I admire what you are doing.
Chris. For starters your load is going subsonic at around 480 yards. Your bullet drop at one mile would be roughly 5,135.71 inches, or about 428 feet.

don't even need to spin the dials for that much drop.
just measure out some string and let the big o'l mylar balloon go,,, bam no problems.

Oh, that's all? Not near the problem I thought it would be!

My long range shooting is limited to PDogs, and about 500 max,
with a couple of times a bit over 600. Have nothing against extreme
long range shooting, and would probably enjoy it if I had that kind
of distance to shoot at. More power to Waco! Durn fine shooting.

Paul. 500-600 is a stretch when the target is a small critter. That's great practice. I shoot at 500 pretty regular with my 308 using jacketed.
I have a cast load I want to try there. It's a 10" steel plate.
2 MOA at 500 might be doable?.....

Once I started shooting 500 with open sights in NRA High Power, I got comfortable
with what could be done. I did stuff myself that I was unaware that ANYONE could
do, just out of ignorance. Real High Power shooters could smoke me by a mile, I
never got past Expert. Realized that to get to the next level would require really
getting serious about practice, better equipment than a bone stock Colt HBAR Match.
But it taught me a lot about wind, running (and trusting) the sights for different ranges,
and different loads. Just the idea that you could run the sight down to the bottom, come
up 59 clicks and be right on target at 500, or up 9 and be on at 200 was a revelation
to a newbie.

Once shot a 100-7X for the first ten shots at 500, then blew it up to 197-12X for the whole
string. That was my very best day, ever. I was tickled that this could be done
with irons, never could match those scores. And of course, there were guys in my
club who equaled that pretty regularly, and stomped me flat at 200 standing. That
really scared me the first time....I worried about hitting the berm. Eventually was
getting lower 80s standing 200, just amazed the heck out of myself. Still not all that
impressive on a absolute scale, but well beyond what I imagined was possible in my
ignorance. Good coaching from better shooters and reading NRA books helped my
learn a lot. I learn by challenging myself, had fun, although eventually an 80 shots
for record day was really tiring, esp in August in KS.

I wish I had somewhere to shoot long distances, I'd by a .338 Lap and give that stuff
a try. My brother has one, I have shot it a couple of times. Pretty neat, but not
worth fooling with at the 300 yds normally available to me.

Thank you. I'm in the process of working up a new load now using 285gr Hornady ELD bullets and Retumbo powder.
