Lost your toe ? ?

A friend on mine in TX bought a Win. 94 and had it shipped to his FFL.
When the firearm arrived the toe on the stock was chipped off.
He contacted me and said, he was afraid to tackle the job,
He said he found the chip in the box and would send it with the buttstock.

Tell me what you think ?

Repairs are completed below ( I used
tinted Brownell's Acra Glass to make the repair ) :

I remember an old thread at CB that was the same, I thought the same thing Keith did at the time!

Very nice, Ben, I see you did the only reasonable thing and stripped/refinished the whole enchilada. I had occasion to do a minor repair on one of those stocks once (small chip of wood flaked off at back of bottom tang) and I had a devil of a time getting the finish to blend with the factory coat. In fact, I never did get it right. There was some sort of sprayed on epoxy or urethane clear coat, so what I ended up doing was putting two coats of spar varnish over the repaired area and then wet-sanded with water down through the grits to 3000 and then buffed it with rouge to approximate the shine of the rest of the stock. I don't like those factory finishes, they scratch too easily and the built-up finish is too difficult to match/blend. MUCH prefer BLO sanded in, that's how I do most of my stocks except for the cherrywood, that requires thinned BLO or teak oil rubbed in very sparingly with a finger.

Believe it or not, I didn't do that , I made what I call a " Spot Repair ".
Tricky, but obviously it can be done.

Fantastic work Ben. Was the buttplate broken too?

No ?????????? If this butt plate is the orig. factory butt plate , I cannot understand how the stock could have the chip broken out of the toe area and it not crack the butt plate.

?????????????????

Stock looked two different colors in before/after photos and the repair was too perfect to think you matched, it, you are a MASTER, Ben!!

A " Master ", I'm not certain about ? ?
That comment is awfully nice however.

My camera plays tricks with colors.
Inside with incandescent lighting , it makes things look lighter.
Outside, with natural daylight, it makes things look darker.

Bill,

MANY THANKS ! !

I told the owner ( after the work was completed ) that if 40 people picked up the rifle and examined it, I had my doubts that any of them would notice the repair.

I wonder if it might have been a sharp side or front impact to not have broken the plate. On the tip of the broken piece it almost looks like it happened there or just below it in the second pic.

Pure speculation on our behalf.
I agree that it seems odd that the chip could occur without damage to the butt plate ? ? ?

Think maybe somebody had taken the buttplate off for some reason and dropped the gun? After all, a buttplate is designed to protect the butt from damage...

It broke during or before shipping. The buttplates are flexible, the wood there at the toe is extremely brittle like glass. One good drop on the butt, or being slung down the conveyor rollers and into another box, or off on the floor, or simply launched overhand into the back of a truck by some of the "exuberant" holiday part time labor (AKA 200-lb apes) is all it would take to pop that toe off and leave the buttplate un-damaged.
