M1955 Intital Test Fire

Broke out my new M1955 Smith today and blew out the cobwebs. Does it’s part when I do mine. Trigger’s really nice and I have to get use to it.

No surprises on ammo. Had about 500 rounds spread between my M1911 and Ruger Blackhawk combination. The 1955 has to have ‘em flush seated with the diameter bullet I had loaded. Forgot that it headspaces on the case mouth. Corrected that.

The 200 grain wadcutter Lyman gave no surprises. I knew that load would shoot as I’d previously tested it on a Ransom rest with an accurate Colt.

I found about 250 rounds for the Blackhawk loaded with a 454190HP weighing about 238 grains over 6.5 grains of Herco. Shot really nice in the M1955 as is.

My next experiment with it will be the Lyman 452374HP which weighs in at 220 grains or thereabouts. Light load, heavy load and then a medium load.

After selecting the ammo, I dug through my stash of “moons”. Had a couple of fulls, a bunch of halfs and a slew of 1/3s. I always likes the 1/3s as they carry better and you can reload partial cylinders easier. The Lyman wadcutters load all right and the 454190HPs slide right in. I’m expecting the 452374s to as well.

Test firing was nice and shows great potential for this gun. No surprises on ammo I already had loaded. #2 son is sending some AR brass but I’ve tried it before and decided to stay with the 1/3 moons and auto brass./beagle

There is a lot to like about a 45 ACP revolver.

I like both Auto Rim brass and clipped ACPs. I have an old-school RCBS 45 ACP seating die that can set a roll crimp if adjusted to do so, and that's how I roll with the AR loads. The ACP loads get taper-crimped at about .470", which just about turns the seating bell back straight like it should be. AR brass gets the revolver-specific bullets like Lyman #454424 and #452423. 255 and 240 grains respectively in 92/6/2 alloy. The ACP brass gets bottom-feeder bullets.

I have yet to find a casting or J-word that my 625 doesn't like.

Ha! I've done that very thing with a solid and a little less powder, one of my "heavy for caliber" experiments. It shot great in my 1911s but was a lot slower on the rebound for rapid-fire or double-taps so I went back to more conventional loads.

Under 185 grains or over 230 grains with the 45 ACP bottom-feeders has been a low-profit venture for me as well. The 240-270 grain SWCs are a delight in the ACP/AR wheelgun, though

Yes! I use the 454190HP and a 452490HP with the GC removed in a Ruger combo. In either the Colt or ACP case. My best bullets.
The 452423 and 454424 don’t make the cut past 70 yards. In my experience./beagle
