Marlin Model 80

My nephew isn’t really a “gun guy” but he ended up with an old J.C. Higgins bolt action .22, AKA Marlin Model 80. He’s good guy but his firearm’s knowledge comes from scouting when he was young. The gun was broken, (nothing major) and he didn’t know how to fix it. I’m trying to get it straightened out from 400 miles away. I have the bolt and I ordered a few parts to get it right. I’m waiting on them to arrive. Those old Marlin parts are stupid expensive.! In addition to the parts he needed, I was going to give him a spare magazine, but those things are running $60+. No joy. If this gun didn’t have 60+ years of memories attached to it, I think I would tell him to hang it on the wall and get another one.

You might look under Marlin 780 and Glenfield 25 for parts. I've done this with the J C Higgins 42 (Marlin 80) but quite a while ago.

I found what I needed, so all good there.
Thought about sending him a spare magazine,.....just to help him out; .that's not happening at these current prices.

I hunted for an extra magazine for my old Glenfield .22 for at least a couple of decades and finally found out the one for the Marlin 25 would fit. It wouldn't have cost much more to buy another rifle with a magazine but at least it was available, and brand new.

It wasn't THAT long ago that you could dig through a cardboard box on the floor of any gun shop and find a half dozen Marlin mags for $5 each.

Well I rumaged through many boxes of magazines at quite a few small-town gun shows off and on for the better part of 20 years and never got lucky. Ciuld have bought at least one new magazine just for the entrance fees if I'd realized sooner to look for the Marlin equivalent new.
