saw one of those (think all round bbl) tonight at Cabelas in 38-40. Very cool looking rifle. It was the old school curved steel butt.

in 44 Mag or any other pistol caliber - how bad can the round butt plate be?!? recoil should be almost non-existent, I would THINK (and NO, I have ever shot one!)

Light enough rifle it can get a little hairy over time. My Marlin 45 Colt will push a 265 gr bullet to 1500 and the rifle might be 6 pounds. It is a bit lively. Putting the rifle out on your arm due to a crescent butt doesn't make it better.

Shotgun butt all the way for me.

92s are wonderfully lightweight.
Makes you long for a shotgun butt.

Brad and Tom nailed it. Stout .44 Magnum loads are plenty enough to get tiresome very quickly with a deep crescent butt plate.

Being a woodworker is a previous life, I modified the stocks of my 5.8 lb Miroku 92 and 86 carbine to shotgun style.
Not an easy job, but well worth it.

the heavy loads will rough you up pretty good with the crescent plate.
I had a simple wrap around leather pad made for my 44 mag and it cuts the recoil in half just by taking most of the crescent out.
I need to order a couple more for the 45's and the 86.

I wonder why they cut so much negative pitch in that Winchester.
that's like 15*, 9 would be more than enough to keep the muzzle from jumping up under recoil, and would fit most peoples chest better.
it would help you hold your head down on the gun for fast follow up shots, but still,,,, that's a bit more than necessary.

I noticed that Henry puts rubber, shotgun-style recoil pads on all their BB steel versions because they are significantly lighter than the brass-framed, octagonal-barrel BBs.

Much is, and has been written about how to shoot. How to place your cheek against the stock. Alignment of head so eyes sight a reliable repeatable sight picture.......... Maybe YOU MIGHT hear a firm shoulder against the stock comment....

Seldom, if ever, (other than shotgun shooters) do you hear much about a consistent positioning of shoulder/butt stock alignment for best results. It matters just like all the rest.

That's why our forefathers put a crescent butt on their stocks! If your shoulder/butt stock mount isn't correct the crescent will 'talk' to you..... With the big boys it talks with a loud voice! Don't blame a crescent butt plate for shooter misalignment.:D

change where the gun comes against your shoulder more than once at a shotgun tournament and you might as well save the rest of your shells and go home [unless your playing the draw for score money]

Just noticed today whilst rubbing out old tired, worker bee hands....

Left palm,at the base of forefinger and middle, there's a noticeable hump of built up muscle/bone.... took a minute to figure, dang that's the build up from 50 years of shooting trad bows?

Handled a new Win 92 in 45 Colt today. Button magazine, oct to round barrel, crescent butt. It handled like a charm and just felt right.

Makes me want the 125 Anniv model even more

Mr. Marlin looking at Winchesters ...what's the world coming to.

Never any justification needed, I'm a bit surprised, but still say go get her.

I'm worried Brad's computer may be hacked...how would we tell if it were an imposter anyway?

You could tell by the lack of iCorrect hilarity, for one thing. Lack of puns might be another. And if you ever see banner ads or popups here, he's been hacked for sure, and possibly abducted by aliens.

Even though I prefer the crescent butt on lever rifles, I'd have trouble finding fault with a '92 in 44 mag. And, being a sucker for nice wood and half octagonal barrels, that is a swell looking rifle. Already drilled and tapped for a tang sight too.

Not a '92, but this is the configuration that gets me salivating.

The 1886 was always my favorite of the Winchester leverguns, and that's a beautiful example of one. .45/70 I presume?
