Monday, 11 September... Celebrate our freedom with casting!

As chance has it, Monday appears to be a primo day for casting outside. Temps in the 60s, wind expected to be 5mph or less.

I have diddled with the idea of buying 225438s, GC'd sized to .225, and Loobed, from Beartooth Bullets.

http://beartoothbullets.com/bulletselect/index.htm?category=7&id=

"A traditional style bullet designed for the .22 Hornet, which also performs well to about 2300 fps. in other center-fire .22 caliber cartridges. Very accurate when bullet seated to engage the lands when a loaded round is chambered."

But at $25 a hundred, I'd rather pull out my sweet RCBS pot (not like Colorado ) and fire up a bowl with some lead, then take some hits with a recent production Lyman dual cavity 225438 (after some fine tuning).

I have a hungry .22 Hornet to feed. 21" Contender with loads that are slow - 1,000 to 1,400 fps for the elusive Wisconsin Sabre Toothed Squirrel.. Honest Injun, they exist! Might be able to use some of that jug of Unique, or maybe Red Dot...

With all the focus on windy rainy days & nights I haven't heard a word about 09-11-01 on the news. Sad.

Monday is our anniversary, we haven't really felt like celebrating it too much for the last 16 years. Doing something fun and creative sounds like a good idea.

I remember it like it was Bushs fault .... :)

I'll be at work , same time , same place as that morning .
Probably a moment of quiet .
The 343 lost had a big impact on my click back then .
just a few short yr ago we were singing the anthem , carrying flags and every man and woman wanted to pick up their neighbors ,dust them off then hunt the men responsible down .

Apologies if that tipped to far .........

Wife's mother is my boy's last living grandparent. We buy her a round-trip ticket (from Japan) every year and she stays a couple of months. John & Cindy and Rick met her while we were in Mountain Home. Had to take her to LAX last Thursday and although we always hate to see her go, I'm glad not to have to do that tomorrow.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
9/11. Lotta bad memories. Spent from 9/12/01 till the following spring down there on and off. Was at Ground Zero by 10AM or so the morning of 9/12 and worked there for some time. Like I said, lotta of bad memories. Saddest part is so many people have already forgotten.

You is so so definitely right Bret! You say the saddest part is that so many have
already forgotten. I agree, but rather IMO than just sad, I find it disgusting!

Eclectic mix, 412263 on left (43) , 410610 (102, love dual cavity moulds), 358315 (66), and some teeny 225438 (at least 15 good so far).

Casting_Call-358315.jpg
Some 358315, this is only a single cavity, but it was dropping sweet projos . Old retrobate will most likely be using these in a 357 Max.

Used my retail Lyman 225438 for the first time today. I finally cracked the code (Kenneth). I used 409 all purpose cleaner on the mould (if you can degrease barrels prior to bluing with 409, must be something good), smoked 'em with a butane charcoal lighter, and set 'em on top of my Pro Melt to heat.

Left quite a bit of sprue on the plate, but that wasn't always enough. My technique (YMMV) was to put the ladle spout into direct contact, pour, then pull away a little bit while allowing lead to flow. Repeat for second cavity, except pour more lead on the plate.

Getting good fill, crisp gas check shanks. All this with a current production Lyman mould, I did NOTHING to it other than degrase it.... I might break the upper mould halves inner edge...

I couldn't tell by your OP if you're meat hunting or is it self defense?

Me? I can't defend against my Brittany Spaniel's desires...

Meat hunting? Thank God for supermarkets, otherwise I'd be quite hungry...

I cast because I can... Waiting on a Lyman .225 H&I sizer die to properly finish these. Inbound as I write this. 225438s mic around .225, so this will be more of a Lūb Monkey Production, adding the GC and pumping the handle up and down...

"Sabre tooth squirrels".....just didn't know if meat damage was at issue. If it was cause they are knawing at your pant leg....that spells "defensive" strategies and would be hitting them with all the velocity I could muster. Not being satisfied till they started to "chunk".Highly technical, terminal ballistic term.

I've got .22 cal CB loads that'll split a Crow into several pcs(chunks). But it takes high velocity and razor sharp meplats. In a "fine red mist" sort of logic.
