Mossberg MVP Bolt Action Rifle Build in .338 Spectre

I ended up doing some trading and picked up a Mossberg MVP bolt action rifle currently chambered in .223/5.56. I sent it off to have some custom work done to rechamber/rebarrel the gun to .338 Spectre (yes, I know, it is an odd caliber and not practical for most people). For those of you who don't know, .338 Spectre is just a slightly bigger version of the .300 blk. It is 10mm magnum pistol brass necked down to .338. I have an AR15 chambered in this caliber already and really wanted to do a bolt gun in the same caliber. The ability to use AR15 mags in the bolt gun (especially with this cartridge/caliber) makes the MVP a good candidate as a donor action. The bolt face will need to be opened up a bit, maybe a little work on the feed ramp, etc... The barrel is a rem700 barrel, so it will need to be rethreaded to match the MVP threads and then properly headspaced. I currently shoot 300 gr subsonic bullets and supersonic 200-250ish gr. The bolt gun will allow me to make some really quiet loads with some of the faster pistol powders. I will post some pics when it is done.

If you want to save a little on the bolt work use 22 Nosler brass . It's 6.8 Rem dia , very close to 40 and 10mm with the 223/556 head ... Just a thought .

Well, I already have an AR chambered in .338 spectre, so I'd want to load ammo that would work in both firearms. But that is an interesting idea.

Lol, I will probably mix the brass between the two and do full length sizing to keep them compatible. Besides, the brass from the 10mm magnum is not very expensive from starline.

Just as a follow up, the rifle has been created. I did a video showing some of the reasoning behind the choices made. Also included a little bit of video of the gun being made.

Good to know I'm not the only one with odd preferences in rifles. I like it!

As for a Socom bolt action, that should be a walk in the park.

Yeah, bolt action .458 socom's are more common now. Someday I will build one. I want to get a big 300+ gr bullet mold for this gun for subsonic shooting with pistol powders. Should be fun. Anyways, took the gun up there with me when I was visiting some family up in WA and had a few minutes to try to sight in the rifle. Conditions were not ideal, but made do with what I had.

I have to pay you a compliment on your videos.
your music is chosen well, there is a story line [good editing]
you speak in plain English with good audio.
your in focus without a bunch of jittery or off topic ground or sky shots..
it's almost like I'm there just visiting and your telling me about your side of the topic of the afternoon.

Thanks for the kind words, fiver. I try to do those things to make the video pleasant to watch--even for my wife (who isn't as much of a gun person as me). I always ask my wife to preview the video to check for misspellings, and/or other issues before I upload them. She lets me know when it starts getting too "blah blah blah ish." Sometimes I have to prep her before watching the videos though, and let her know it is a "blah blah" video where I am talking and explaining a bunch of stuff. But yes, thanks for the compliment!

Good camera, too. I'd do more if it didn't take an hour to upload a two-minute video from my house.

So, uh...i don't have any experience with 338 spectre, but I had no idea it was a bunny cartridge. :D

My dog doesn't want me to get one of those. He believes bunnies are to be run down crippled & then fetched after he throws them around for himself to go get. If they are still twitching after a few self retrieves brings them to my wife.

Definitely nice vids, shooting, & gun. Love the mag compatibility.

Yes, the camera on my Google PixelXL works well. The 240 fps slow mo setting also works quite well as long as the phone doesn't get too hot (ie: recording in 100*F+ weather). I am a bit spoiled with fast internet. I have google fiber, so uploading only takes a minute or so.

Lol, I didn't think it was a bunny round either... But I had it right there in the house--and I didn't need ear plugs for it with the suppressor (even when shooting those supers). I do need to get a good .338 mold(s) for it. I want to get a heavy 300gr for subs, and a light weight hollow point (150-200 gr) for supers, for shooting things like this? 200 gr soft cast hollow point... hmmm that sounds nice. I guess I can also do quiet lightweight subs in this bolt gun.
