You guys are going to cost me a lot of money. Currently I'm eyeing a .35 rifle caliber Shilen sporter barrel blank at Midway that will fit in my mini-lathe and a chamber reamer. Might finally get my Dad's push-feed Model 70 Featherweight .270 fixed and made into something accurate and useful.

Leaning more toward a Douglas 8-groove profiled blank from Brownells now.

The only 8 groove that I own is in my Handi 30-30 Win.
It is a nail driver ! ! :):):)

as far as slow powders go, what do you prefer? I am still bouncing between powder choiced for a 9.3X62 @ 2000-2200 w/ 285gr boolit. I have narrowed it down to either reloader 15 or 17. what do you guys think? thanks a lot-Travis

4895 will get you there too Travis. I don't know that RE17 is the best choice, may be able to stretch RE7 and get there?

I used my 35 Whelen to harvest 2 deer this year, first blood for it, performed perfectly.

well, I am looking to the slower powders to give the boolit a bit softer acceleration. I will probably start out with rel 15, and try 4895 later on down the road. I don't want to go any faster than that with the heavy (280+) boolits. I will probably design some 200-220gr plinkers later, and I have imr 4198 and rel 7 for those. thanks!-Travis

I think it was your posts that lead me toward 4350 35 shooter, never looked back.

hmm.. well reloader 17 is equal to 4350, 15 is a bit faster, with a max charge of about 55grs, instead of I think 62 for 4350/r17. I have heard 15 is good for both the whelen and the 9.3, have you tried it? I think it is equal to 4320, and if you have tried it, is it worth the savings on powder?

I pulled that Model 70 down a few weeks ago and found the Acra-Glas I put in there many years ago had disintegrated. That might explain why I couldn't hit a barn from the inside the last few times I tried to get it to shoot. After studying the barrel closely and finding absolutely nothing wrong with it, the thing that makes sense to do next is re-bed it and have another go, as it used to shoot very well when the bedding was fresh.

I have a .338-06 in a Mauser action. I have had a .338-06 Ackley Improved 40* in a Mauser action also. That one cured me because of feeding problems. (You have to get the box dimensions right. If your gunsmith wants to work on the rails, get a new gunsmith.) The powder that worked the best was IMR4320 in the Improved case. Don't know if it would be best in the .35, but seems I've heard of it's use there as well. As for headspace, the .400 Whelen was always an improved case. When made correctly, there are no headspace issues. I think when people hear the name Whelen they automatically think "headspace" and that is because of ignorant gunwriters. The .35 Whelen never had any headspace issues that weren't caused by the reloader himself.

I haven't personally seen a whelen yet that wouldn't shoot 4350 very well with cast.
What i always find surprising though , is they may well prefer a diifferent brand per individual rifle, suchs as imr, aa, or h4350.
My brothers h&r prefers the aa brand hands down.

Guess it comes down to the different coatings on the powder and the slightly different burn rate?
The whelen seems to be a natural for cast bullet shooting from my experience with it and i always love to read about other's success with it!
