My SDB little helpers

When I bought the SDB way back they offered a cartridge counter which operated off station #4 but never had very good luck with it there. Had a piece of aluminum 1x2 tubing (guess you'd call it that) so I mounted that on the left side of the press, modified the counter arm and run it when it throws the powder charge. So far that has worked without issues.

Then after reading about lighting things up a bit bought a couple battery powered LED's that clip on to the "wings" I added to the 1x2. Flexible so you can easily see the powder is there and that the case didn't get cocked on the initial insert. I've done that having limited feeling in my right hand and this helps on that too.

The little protrusions that hold the spent primer holder tend to break. Trimmed out the lid of one of my pill bottles with a dremel bit and bolted the lid to the bottom and now I have zero spent primers on the floor.

Another thing I do is put wood handles on my allan wrenches for molds, etc. so have some shorter ones made up for the most used on the SDB.

Way back I made a pattern of how I wanted my parts bin boxes arranged so as to have bullets and cases close at hand. Used a piece of 1/4" plywood that sits under the press and has holes routed for the bin boxes to sit it. Kind of a poor mans strong mount. I didn't want the extra height anyhow as I load sitting on a stool and this has worked well for me over the years.Counter 1x2.JPG Clipon LED.jpg

I have never dealt with the SDB.
I have either owned or operated everything else they make though.

Right tool for the job always makes it easier. Sometimes you need to make your own.

Well done

Glad you got it working. I almost bought a used sdb, but the seller flaked out on his word. Nothing like a good home spun solution.

I got those cartridge counters long ago with a 550 and never cared for them. It looks like you have them working fine (with a little homemade engineering). I really like the Allen wrench handle idea, that's one of those things where you wonder why didn't I think of that. I'm going to have to try it. Thank you for the idea.

My preferred handles while casting use an old broom stick so they're large enough to easily grab while wearing gloves. The little rack is fastened to my mold cooling box.

I had a SDB, sold it off. Inherited one from my father, have converted it from .44 Mag to .38/.357. Never saw or thought of
a handle for an allen wrench. Seems like a good idea, though. Lights look good, too.

Mike - way too organized! Looks real nice. Can't figure the black disk with wires on the
fold out aluminum mount on the right side, though.

That's a LED "puck" light. Set to light up the sprue holes on the mold. There's also one on the right side of the pot and one shines down from above also.

bought my first SD for $129.95 (notice it was a SD, no "B" at the time) now have four--got one for $75 when wife was selling off deceased husband's stuff--her price on it not mine.
dillon has gone through 3 handle modifications (at least) so far

two are modified to drop primers through a tube into 3 gallon soft drink plastic bottle

I even use mine to deprime too:
remove tool head, replace with one that just has decapping pin - 4 screws
remove primer assemble - 3 screws
just have to put brass in at St 1--the automatic advance will take them around and drop into bin
when done--good clean up with compressor air and brush (brush seldom needed
reassemble to 'reloader' mode
the change out and back takes about 5 minutes total for both operations.

I can run 44 mag/sp, 45 Colt and 45 ACP cases in the same shellplate--45 ACP have to be positioned carefully but saves changing out shellplate
