Hi Forum

Well was PM ing and pointed this way, from CB.

Just saying Hi and looking to learn and maybe stir some lead with all of you. Have two young girls to teach,
all the buddies can once again find there groceries and are not into learning :-( . I hope the kiddo get into reloading and have fun shooting.

Hey ! I have seen no Scatter Gun Place yet, I have a huge amount to play with in this line from regular loads to buck shot to steel. I know we (most) are not into steel but I'm looking to load for waterfowl to feed, the costly to big bore. I have learned most caster are a wise bunch to learn from. So if I missed it point me in the right direction, season is little over 3 months away.

Thanks and Have a Good One !!

Welcome to the site.
No shotgun section. Haven't really had anyone ask for one until recently. Will consider it going forward.

I have been only kind of hinting around the shotgun thing.
but it ain't a bad idea.

I could do a data dump of loads for various powders I have worked with over the years.

good to see you Teddy... Lamar.

Howdy.
I sold pretty much all of my shotgun stuff some years back.
As to steel shot, I buy it when it is on close out at the end of the season. Other times I will buy case lots when pre season sales show up. Still have to feed my old 835 and SBE.
And I hit local GS after season as it seems guys will trade stuff in every year. Picked up a couple of cases of #5 lead for cheap.
I don't shoot that much trap anymore. I shoot enough to get in on big buys, pallet lots, and I get a couple of cases every other year or so.
Buck shot I still have a fair bunch gifted to me by LEO buddy.

I have tinkered with some shot loads for 45 colt and 38/357 the past few years.

Check out ballisticproducts.com. Order a copy of their Advantages reloading manual (9th edition I think). They also sell slug and buckshot reloading manuals.

BPI does have a good manual.
they have several in fact which covers different hulls and load types.

I just got one for the Rio style of hulls which basically covers the Cheddite type of hulls too.
the newer Federal hulls are a cheddite type and many of the Estate hulls are the same as Federal just red and not purple [both take standard primers] the ones with a paper base wad and silver steel colored head.

whereas the all red cheddite's with the brass heads [from France] and the federal game and target hulls [with brass plated heads also] both take the larger diameter cheddite primer and have a larger internal case volume.
they both have a larger inner diameter than the federal gold medal hulls [.750 versus .730]
the new gold medal hulls have changed recently and now have a steel head.

things in the shotgun world have drastically changed in the last few years.
I could go on, but this thread ain't about that.

Have been looking into there stuff. Only thing is they from what I hear are not as full of data as I was hoping for. Mostly the steel.

A larger hull should lower pressure if I'm following right.

I've been at the shotgun end, of reloading for a long time, we'll have to be continue

Many yr ago I bought a bunch of the Fiocchi clear high brass low base 2.75" , CSD 118 unslit wads and the status of steel from BPI .
I also shot an offering from MEC for wads .
For my time and money and hunting grounds BPI was the ticket . 1s and Bs , 1 1/16oz over 4756 was awesome on teal to Western Honkers . I didn't have a Chrony then but the book said 1470 fps .
Then I found that PMC was loading exactly that over Aliant Steel for about $.75 a box more than mine . Kent Fasteel is in the same basket , preseason and post season clearance . For the couple of bucks a box I can't justify spending the time .
When I was doing it FC , Rem and Win were the only game and the 3" 1 1/4-3/8 BB and BBB weren't getting the job done and were $12-17/box when I could load more effective ammo at $5.40 /box it was well worth it .

Hey welcome aboard !

the biggest issue with BPI is they try to run everything on the farthest end of the speed scale.
I don't need 1500 fps trap loads.

a larger hull allows everything to snuggle in deeper.
[this is where things get confusing]
you affect your crimp at this point.
so you use a longer wad column, the longer wad column gives the powder [gas] more room to expand before attaining pressure by pushing against the weight of the shot.
this in turn lowers pressures making the powder burn less efficiently.
but you get a better crimp so you gain some of that back.
the problem is it isn't reliably predictable as to how much you lose and how much you gain.
and the wad diameter [gas seal] throws another wrench in the mix.

what I have been doing recently is using the larger internal diameter hulls.
going directly to the oversized Rio primer.
and using 1 ounce wads.
but with more than 1 ounce of shot. [1-1/16 or 9/8 oz]
I have also been working with bulky powders to try and get their volume above the base disc inside the hull to avoid the wad catching it's edge on the way in.

for steel shot loads that shouldn't be too much of a problem.
getting the wad petals up to the fold area or just below that is the trick.
then using a felt spacer or two underneath the shot column to adjust the crimp height and/or payload weight would be how I would approach it.

yes.
one more thing about that.
adding a cushion under the shot acts like part of the air cushion [wads crush section] for the powders gas to expand into.
adding stuff on top of the shot adds to the payload weight.
so adding a felt underneath a load of steel shot actually helps it [the load] by more than just allowing a better release of all the shot from the wad.

Well in a year or two we are going to need the 12 steel. Cost to load them is soso to buying.

I like to goose hunt (just got back into it 2 yrs. ago) and here the local birds all are smart or get smart or die young. After a month or so. They all know to circle and pass at that 45-50 yds, Even seen the darn things, land and walk to there buddies and if anything is ??? there gone. So after Dec Of 2015 Watching two groups pass at 45-50 yards thinking two hours to get here hour to set up and same to go home and no shooting. SO!! I looked into the 3.5 line 12's and found a 10 with a bailey choke and she patterns if the right load great. Federal Shok 1 1/2 of BB at 47 yds 93-95 hits inside 30" circle. At just over $1.20 every trigger pull I can load them a little cheaper then that. All here but the wads and the data. Have all the different powders Long shot, Steel ,and the old stand byes. Can maybe use some BBB but that as heavy as I'm going. Hard enough to hit at 45 yds and then getting out to 50, 55, 60 will be the limit for me that's a haul. But longest shot last year was in the 65 yds range. Missed the bird I was on and hit the next one out, over leading on my part died at 85-90 yds was only 15' up when I shot (hits 7 times). Average shot is 40-45 yds and 60-70 % hits and all dead like rocks, like they were hit over the head.

If the kiddos want to go in a few years, they will most likely be the first shooters and in the range 0f 20-40 yds, I like to hunt not just to kill, so I'm the back up shooter. We normally let the the younger newer hunters shoot first. lt's funny when I'm with the main group my average goes down to 25-30% hits ;) , Odd the bird I'm on is hit and someone says, "" I got that one"".

So interested in data : for 10 steel , 12 steel , 20 slug , 20 gauge slugs in a 12 ???, and buck shot.

The cushion steel driver CSD series comes with its specific data in the bag it is a 12ga only design .
I shot it in a 3" BPS 26" Steel Special barrel , at 40 yd I'd have 105-107 of 115 pellets inside 27" . (That was the biggest circle I could draw dead round) . They come in 7/8, 1oz and 1 1/8 (CSD 078,100,118) . BPI has tons of 10 ga stuff but it seems like it is mostly 2 piece wads for steel in the mighty 10 .
Their data is what Lyman published before they added steel shot to their manuals for the BPI components .

I spent plenty of late season Wednesday nights knocking out 3-4 boxes to take the kids on Saturday and Sunday . I must have had a dozen deks full of poly foam ......... Big Water has its own challenges . I can't count the scoters I couldn't shoot because they wouldn't flush inside 50 or hung up taunting us at 75-80 .......

Thanks for pointers Harter

At BPI for 10 lately has been hit or miss on in stock items, got an e-mail a last week they got shipment in.

TPS 10 in 10 Ga back in stock. I think that was the only one they had right after the start of the year.

BPD-10 in 10 Ga back in stock.

CSD no 10 Ga listed , sound like this is a good wad for the 12. But at $12-$14 a box on sale maybe the girls that we work on loads for them. Hurt my back, so I don't think I'm going to do too much rowing this year. So not much 12 ga, will see. Thanks for information.

Teflon Wraps 10 to 12ga in stock think they normally have them, or seem to.

Overshot Cards (500/bag) still out of stock .

That's about all they carry for the 10 Ga.

Allot more for the 12, but we are back to 40-45 yards for good effect range and at 50 we end up chasing birds and all that fun stuff. Even at 45 yards we have to chase at times. Most of my factor loads for 12 Ga 3" do okay, have a bunch yet to shoot. At the flea markets at the sportsman clubs we see allot of cheap 12 Ga steel from guys getting out of it. Had to pass on some Winchester at $8 a box too low on funds.

Have A Good One !! Teddy

Let me know what is the best loads for 10 Ga, If you have any steel BB-BBB loads, looking for 50-55 yds. Don't think I can normally hit out past that so no need for T or F shot. Should be able to load them for $13- $15 a box Maybe even a little cheaper, normal if I find it its $28 to $32 a box.
