Old man and old cartridges

Hard to find here Bret. Years back, my favorite squirrel
ctg was Rem Short HP's. Worked great to 25 -30 yds,
and were very accurate.

Not easy to find, I agree. I buy what I can when I can find it. Still does the job on rats and coyotes in traps.

the Grandson will be getting a 260 Rem. as his first rifle.
once I finish off the Barrel in the old western field 243 it's going to get a new 6.5 barrel, a 100% solid bed into the stock, a decent recoil pad installed, and then refinished.

it will be one of those here is the rifle and the load it likes, ask your Mom how to make the ammo things.

260 Rem. Lucky Grandson. One and done! Can shoot about anything in NA with it with right bullet. If I didn't own a Mdl 70 FWT and Sportered Swede (what an idiot I am! - but has been a 25 yr project still not complete!) I would own a 260 AND a 6.5 Creed. And may still if/when I get grandkids that want to hunt! 6.5s (almost any one) are like the 16 ga, damn near perfect in my book! Same with 7x57

I have a 7x57 project that has moved ahead like it is in molasses.
I really should have not chopped down the 8 mauser rifle to get the project started, it was in just about perfect condition with a mint bore and very accurate..
but someone gave me a pretty nice walnut stock, A&B had barrels on sale so I tacked it and an AI finish reamer on the end of a LGS order all in about 20 minutes time. [talk about a bunch of enablers]
I got the stock straightened out and everything bedded together properly and it's a nice looking little package so far.
now I have to get it all bolted together, chambered, and get the receiver D&T'd to finish it off.
it will be a nice light weight little rifle when it's done... if I get it done.

Pretty hard to beat the 7x57 or 6.5 Swede for anything in the lower 48 except maybe Grizzy. But, I may be biased since shooting at extrme ranges from a plastic stocked Mall Ninja semi-auto faux "sniper" rifle wearing 8-32x50 glass ain't exactly my definition of "hunting".

This year I killed an antelope buck at over 300 yards with a 257 Roberts. A very nice Whitetail buck with the 270, and a doe with a 38-55. My main bunny and plinking rifle is a 110 year old 25-20 WCF. The shotgun that made the trip to pheasant country was a SxS 16ga. The two backups for the deer/antelope duty are both chambered to the 250-3000 cartridge.
Can't see as I was all that handicapped on any of them.

I agree 100%. My current tractor gun is a 6.5x257R Arisaka, my shotgun use os almost exclusively a 16 ga Ithaca 37 and the list goes on.

I guess my newest is the .32 mag. but I shoot my .38 spl. and .30-30 the most. I've got three 16's and love two of them. I spend a lot of time carrying a A5 16 pheasant hunting every year, but push come to shove, I would probably give up my 16's if I had to choose between my 16's and 20's. Problem with 16's is loading components are like hens teeth.

I have a 6.5x257 in an arisaka.
I need to get the sights sorted out on it.
my ugliest most beater couldn't care less rifle that still shoots straight is an Arisaka in 257 Bob with a weatherby like shoulder, it wears a little leuold 2x7 scope.
it's an odd duck, but with a little effort on my part it turned into a shooter.
it really likes the Remington 86gr SP pushed along to about 2400 fps.

16 ga wads are available from Precision Reloading, BPI, and Grafs. The main problem is lack of a decent hull for reloading. Lots of Cheddite hulls from the suppliers above, but they don't last all that long.

I have enough hulls in Remington And SX to last. I don't shoot trap or sporting clays with my 16's for that reason. I won't be running out of wads any time soon. I've even got card,Kwiksert, and pgs wads I've hoarded over the years. Still see some stuff at trappers conventions in the tailgate areas.

very interesting to see the 16s listed! I now have 3 and may pick up another one. And have a loader on the way

I used to be able to get Fiocchi 16 ga loads. Haven't looked for them in long time. Better get on it I suppose. They were great loads for me.

Never have loaded for the 16 that I recall. Have a beautiferous Pacific 12 ga loader that I still ahven't used. A LnL progressive still in the box and a 5 gal can of 38 brass too. Life gets in the way.

Stupidly passed on a pallet of 410 2 1/2" loads at something in the $1.99 a box some years back. That WAS stupid. Cottontails don't know the difference between 2 1/2 and 3" at 30 feet.

wow they are like 11.00 a box now.
funny the 410.
I have hulls, wads, powder, a conversion for the one press, and no gun.
I had a Steven's single shot and used it for about everything including duck hunting over decoy's, before they made steel shot mandatory.

I cut my teeth on a .410 press. I think it was a C-H that came with 12 ga. dies and I converted it with Mec dies to .410. I'd traded my grandfather a Sheridan 5 mm pellet rifle for a BA Mossberg .410. I polished that .410 like it was gold, just because. Couldn't even guess how many squirrels I shot with that, until I discovered .22 shells were a lot cheaper. That .410 taught me a lot about loading shotgun and to make sure the shot didn't bridge in the drop tube(tap tap tap). The drop tube had dimples on it when I sold it, from me tapping on it after dropping each load of shot. LOL Even a 1/2 oz of #6's makes quite an impression on you when it rolls in all directions on a hard linoleum bench top. Of course I had to try loading #4's and 3" hulls to make up for loss of pellet count with the 4"s. I've got a 600 jr I keep set up in .410 now and rarely shoot them. I traded off a Rem. 1100 3" I shot a lot of doves with in Texas. That's one I'm gonna replace some day, just because!

Bret, I got one of those Paco Kelley tools for Christmas. Makes HP's, cup points, and a weird shape that I don't understand. KInda pricey but it will make .22 Short HP's and a reasonable semblance of an SGB which has gotten hard to find around here.

They, PACO"S, 22 tools work as described. At one time I have a 1930's S&W .22 Outdoorsman. Cylinder chambers were .226" the whole length, so he made one for me to swage the bullet that size. Cut group size in half. Still use it to make ammo for shooting gophers and little varmints in my little Steven Marksman.
