I have an 1894 Marlin CBC factory chambered in 38 Spec.
Today , I loaded a few rounds with 10.0 grs. of 2400 and my Ranch Dog, 190 gr. g/c bullet, sized .357 " dia., with Win. small pistol primers.

These are marked for use in my rifle ONLY ! !

Can someone give me a " guess - ta - mat " of the pressures of this load ?

Ben, I'd pull them. QL predicts more than 10,000 psi over max for the .38 Special. I know the rifle platform is more than capable of handling the pressure with ease, but the .38 case heads may not be. 8.3 grains is maxing out the PSI.

OK - Ian,

I only have 12 rounds loaded.
Easy enough to pull them.
No need in stretching the limits of things.

Thanks for your efforts Ian ! !
In my mind, I was thinking about 24K - 26 K.

that is really super nice CCH.
actually the fit and finish on the whole rifle looks to be top notch.

just as a side note and out of curiosity I went and dug through some data.
all kinds of data.
10grs is a near max load for a 158-160gr bullet of both types 11 was right at max.
I dug back far enough to find data for powders such as.
GREY-B.
230-P
TOP-MARK
450-LS
HS-5
500-HS
AND some N [Norma I assume] designated powders. [like N-1010 and N-1020]
GREY-B would have been a half click slower than Bulls-eye like .1-.2grs more for the same velocity's slower.
Top Mark and 450-LS overlapped in everything close enough to have FPS changes of 2 or 3 for the same load.
they probably would be pretty popular target shot shell powders if they were still made.

Interesting CCH. OLD Marlins were done with bone and charcoal in an oven, but that one resembles the process that Stevens used where they slowly dipped the parts into molten arsenic to get the tiger striped affect. Some "CCH" really isn't and is applied chemically as a coating.

Up-Date......, This morning I pulled all rounds with 10.0 grs. of 2400 and replaced the charge with 8.0 grs. of 2400 with my 190 gr. Ranch Dog. That should make for a pretty dramatic drop in pressures.

Thanks,

Ben

Ben.
if things look dirty I noticed a lot of load data recommending Magnum primers. [cci's mostly]
in stuff like the 44 mag and 357 with lower 2400 levels I have found the mag primers did clean up the mummy's.

Fiver,

I've got 5,000 small pistol mag. primers.
Good to know.
I'll keep an eye on that.
