The update seems to work well for me, but I do miss the little blue dots when there are posts to a thread that I haven't read. Is there some way to know if there are unread posts?

This is a comment, not a complaint. Used to be that when I "hovered" over the alert box it would drop down and now I have to click on it to see the list. Kinda liked the old way but that's just the lazy me, the new way is fine.

For me I look for bold forum title or thread names.
Once I have viewed the last post in a thread the thread title is no longerbold. Same thing happens if I have viewed all posts in the forum.

As a matter of personal preference, I don't care for it, it takes more steps to log in, more steps to log out and the security issue requiring hit back and refresh page does nothing to endear me to it, nor does the failure to complete loading pics.

I will continue to visit and peruse the subject matter, no real issues there, just to me, nothing is notably better.

The post composition toolbar is much expanded and has some new features. It also appears that one can upload a photo directly to a private conversation, a feature not existing before (had to link from hosting site to do it).

The "undo" button is a godsend, especially when using a laptop with overly-sensitive touchpad. I can't count the times I've accidentally highlighted all with my thumb right before hitting backspace to correct an errant keystroke....and deleted the whole post.

It doesn't "feel" quite as homey as it did, but that will change with time. I still hate the color theme and blinding brightness of the white, but can deal with that by dimming my screen.

Hhmmm . . . I don't understand the problems your having. Log out is two mouse clicks, just click on your name at the upper right and click log out. I don't think I've tried posting any pictures yet but I will just to test it. I also don't know about the security issue you mention, haven't encountered any such thing with it so not sure what that means.

Sounds like an ISP and end user security software or browse issue?

My internet at home is dicey and it works fine, even loading pictures from the upgraded site. I use Chrome and Vipre. Had to log back in manually for the first time in ages (saved passwords on google prevent the need normally) when the upgrade happened, but it's auto-log in after that. MOB, try it again, I bet your problems disappear unless you're stacking two or more security programs at once.

I preferred the old myself but change is what change is. I will adapt.
I do like being able to put photos and videos easily into a PM

It's probably like the mole family Rick, two members smelled molasses, one member smelled mole-asses, the first two weren't able to understand why. I don't know why either, if I did, I would explain in in minute detail, but I don't so I gave it my best shot. It's still a pretty fair site, regardless.
