Problems with Claybuster CB2118-12 wads

"OK, OK, I'm going as fast as I don't want to go!"
I'm loading a bunch of Remington Premier STS hulls and I picked a load from Lyman's 5th edition on page 164.

It show 24.5 gr Herco with a 12S3 wad. That claybuster wad I'm using is a replacement for the 12S3.

My problem is I really have to work hard to get the CB wad in and then the finished load shows bulges. I decided on a load using Herco and the RXP12 wad instead and it goes in easy.

Anyone had issues with Claybuster wads being too big of diameter?

since those wads are meant for a straight wall hull with a thin wall and an inside diameter of about .730+ [iirc]
and your trying to shove them in a thick walled tapered hull they are gonna be tight, so tight it'll raise your pressures.

the RXP wad is made at about .720 [iirc] and is for a tapered hull it's absolutely no surprise it fits.

so the issue here isn't one of too big or too little it's one of not appropriate combinations.
and no i'm not surprised.
put your load in a federal top gun or gold medal hull and that wad will have about .005 of slop on both sides, and you can slide the wad up and down in the hull with your little finger.

It seems crazy that the book suggests the 12S3 wad then and this Claybuster says on the bag "replacement for 12S3".

Maybe they don't actually test all the loads in the book?

they probably do,,, sortsa... LOL
you'd maybe be real surprised at how many published loads out there don't actually fit in the hull or are extremely inefficient.

i've had loads over fill a hull.
seen them stop data at 1100 fps. due to over pressure from one wad that's a 'clone' of another in one hull and carry on like it didn't happen in another.
I've seen them come up almost a quarter inch short even with the addition of another eighth oz of shot.

and sometimes like in your case they just transfer loads over from before in the old hull.
i know your load will fit in the old AA C-F hulls with a real federal made 12-s3 wad... use to do it.

i keep a little box full of various wads, and cut off hulls by my reloading presses simply so i can go over there and do test fits when i come up with the hey i got a ton of these wads and a couple totes full of these hulls ideas.
before i even get started i can do a little measuring and some slip fitting, if it looks like a match i will find the data,, and then assemble one by hand before crimping it on the press just to see.

Thanks Fiver! Good stuff there. I kind of figured with the wad substitution, something was lost in translation or something.

I just picked another load on the same page using the RXP12 wad and Herco and it loads and crimps perfect in the Premier STS hulls. You can hardly tell they are reloads.

well..
round here fit is king.
in shot shells it's all about stack height.
everything slides in place and the crimp pushes down on it,,, that's pretty much the ideal.
or i guess fit is king applies there too... LOL

oh just as a FYI.
the RXP-12 wad is the wad the factory uses in the STS knock-off promo hulls the clay and field, and gun clubs.
they use the fig-8 wad in the sts and nitro hulls with a higher antimony% shot.

your [highly] probably not gonna find any more RXP wads.

I have a full bag of 500 and another partial.

I load lots of Gun Club hulls but found a big batch of the deep green Premier STS hulls. Those load nicely.

I ran across a new 25# bag of #4 shot so of course I had to start loading it up!

Thanks again!
