Rem 722 in 300 Savage

Ugh! You guys are killing me! I hope that rifle doesn't get altered. Hard to find 300 Savages any more, and I love them and the caliber.

I have 2 300 Savages. Rem 760 pump and Savage 99. 300 Savage is easy to reload. Shoots and hunts great. Short neck is not a problem imo, unless you shooting much heavier for caliber bullets than normal. The 300 Savage is the second 'short neck' caliber I have shot and reloaded for, the other being the 300 Win Mag. And it was a tack driver! I used 180s in it. using 150 grn in the Savage. 165-168 grn is fine too. If you go to 180, a RN is the way to go. All jacketed to date in the 300 Savages, but have the 150 and also 170 FN cast that I would shoot in them. Just not been the highest priority...

Waco - assume you bought the rifle. Before you alter it, I would be interested in it. A 300 Savage bolt would be the prefect new hunter/shooter/wife/gf starter. And for now wimpy guys like me that have rebuilt shoulders. As for reloading, get a set of RCBS dies and load her up. I have not had any problems whatsoever. If you keep it, and reload, feel free to IM me and will share my data.

For all practical purposes, a 300 Sav will do durn near anything that a
308 will do with the proper bullet. As I have said before, old is not
always bad, and new is not always good!

I will pick the rifle up Thursday. No plans to do anything to it but shoot it as is for now. The 300 blk has a short neck with bullets seated well into the case. I get great accuracy with it. I am hoping this one won't be a problem either.

I like Fivers idea on the RCBS 165 sil. Loaded with maybe 15 gr of 2400 it should be good to go. Might need to go up from 15 to 16-16.5 gr?
I really like that bullet up to 1700 fps

Another thought..... Maximum loaded length for the .300 Savage is 2.600". As that gun's vintage saw the same model 722 in .257 Roberts which has a loaded length right at 2.8"..... You may have extra magazine length to seat bullets out and still cycle fine!

If that's the case I'll go along with the RCBS 165 Sil with Lamar and Brad. It's a bore rider too (I think)...

Bore rider if cast fat enough. I have had good luck in many rifles with it up to 1700 fps or so. Go much faster and it can get wonky.
The real joy of that bullet is the short lube groove and full diameter section. It is perfect for a short neck cartridge.

Wonder if NOE makes a copy of that RCBS bullet. Accurate possibly....I'll have to go look.

Similar but maybe not identical? NOE tends to cast fat, not always so with Lee.
The NOE has a tapered nose too, not sure if the Lee does?

If you have the Lee give it a go. May well work fine.

I do like the looks of that RCBS 165 sil mold. Bet it would do well in some of my other rifles as well.

it shoots great in a ton of rifles.
I use it in my 308's my 30-40 Krag [95 lever gun] the 300 b.o., my bolt gun 30-30, 0-6, plus the K-98/11 and K-31 rifles.
I would use it in my 300 savage but it's actually a 31 cal built on a cut down 7.7 jap chamber.
other than a taper based undersize nosed 30-30 magma engineering mold the 165 silh mold was my only 30 cal mold for a long, long time.

once I figured out just how important the long nose was to the success of the design I started manipulating the alloy to give me more and more engraving and to add internal alloy strength.
it is not a good varmint bullet with the harder alloy, they are easier to hit, they just don't die too quickly with a 308 diameter hole drilled through them.

this NOE bullet was designed by Bob and is based on the RCBS design only with the front drive band changed for the K-31 rifles. [notice the hinky part of the picture?]
pre-runner to the silhouette anybody.

this one is based on the Ed Harris design and is more for the 7.62X39 type rifles it just happens to work well in most 30 cal rifles because LEE screwed with the original design.
I would for sure give it a go in the 300 Savage if I had it..

Well it looks like the Harris bullet will be my starting point. I still need a box of brass and dies. Another mold will have to wait for now.
Not too shabby IMO. New used rifle with scope, brass and dies for under 3 bills. I can't wait to show you guys this thing. I thought it looked pretty cool.
I hope she shoots....

As Paul says, almost same as 308 using 150/165 bullets inside 300 yds. And all my deer are inside of 200 yds, so I have no fear!

will also second the ~1800 fps range for accuracy. Things I have read say basically that, and exactly what I ran into with the 30-30. I did get lucky and get a ~1900 fps load that is accurate. For the 308, the best accuracy is supposed to be same. Would not expect the 300 Savage to be any different. Just yet to load cast for the 308/300S...
