Reviving A 1997 Bush Master Varminter 223 - Iron Sights to Scope

Dan that is excellent ! That is the twin to mine it looks like. Of coarse they all look like a herd of zebras to me anyway.
I picked mine up after things cooled way off on them, then went down hill. Gent was dealing with the big D and a lawyer wanted $$$. He told me what the package was I never hesitated.
I had not had one since about 1983. All I recall is they were hungry rascals.
Ian, if you have easy access to scope info on these I would sure like to read on it.
Mine came with a Leupold on it, but took it off and put a 10X Super Sniper I had laying around. I still need to move it up, again and now forward a fair bit.
These fall into my same thoughts as the TC platform. Anything you know about other rifles does not apply.

I'm fairly new to the ar15 world. I had always considered them to be the second ugliest rifle made. My experiences with auto loaders (mini 14) convinced me that they couldn't be accurate.
Boy did that perception change! I now have one factory lower and several 80s, along with five uppers, and am waiting on a 20" Bartlein bbl in 6.5 grendel.
Ian, I'd like to see what I'm doing wrong with scopes, too, unless the info in the op covered it completely.

You guys are the best...took the AR out again yesterday to rezero after having put the scope on a 10/22...once on paper I shot two five round groups..the first FINIALLY MADE IT INTO THE TEENS !! (if you don't count the 4th round flier ;)).... .175+/-

dang fliers.
those are the kinds of groups I expect out of my good AR rifles.
it's still almost a surprise as the little hole appears right next to the others even though I have seen it before.

Fiver ..it is a surprise ..but a nice one..

I have explanations for the fliers...on the first group I was behind the guys in round count 'cause I had just got on paper..one of them had finished and yelled to me to see if I had finished..stupid me I replied with out coming off the rifle..in the second group I had the fist three touching so I thought I would REALLY concentrate on my trigger pull ..stayed there too long....

Next time I won't listen and just shoot and see what happens...:)

Still not too bad for a two stage JP trigger and $200.00 scope and 20 year old components (powder, primers)..

Tis however good that it doesn't come together at under an inch every time
or we would tire of it, and take up knife throwing.

Yes Paul .....that's the true purpose of "fliers"....to keep us young and honest....

The scope seems to be confused ..If you look at the top target , you can see it has to come down...I gave it three clicks down..suppose to be 1/8" clicks..but boy looks more like 1/4" to me..that's a big 3/8"...

Dan,
I have never had a REAL expensive scope Dan, but every scope I have ever had, never
clicked up or down, left or right, exactly an eighth or a quarter inch on paper. Some
came close with horizontal, but not with vertical, but not the opposite. Most I just had
to work with the reality.

I have noticed this..even my Leuplod vari x 111...will track but not necessarily adjust to 1/4" either way..'course that could be my loads..

Don't think I click is the same for 1100 fps as 2700 fps..

If not a FFP reticle the adjustment scale may only be correct for a certain power setting. IDK, never worried much about it and use fixed-power scopes for tacticool doping operations and for dedicated target work.

Don't overlook the 55gr Nosler Varmagedon flat base bullets for excellent field use with top end accuracy. H335 is my go to with this bullet in my Savage 12FV
Sub 1/2" five shot groups at 100 are the norm.
Awesome shooting and sweet rifle Dan.

Waco ..I do want to want to try different bullets ...but I have to wait for the guys to put together an order..our LGS'S don't carry many components..actually few if any..

if their 223 varmageddons are as accurate as their 110gr 30 cal ones are they would definitely be worth dropping some money on.

Interesting this thread came back up. I was out looking for a riser last weekend,no luck. I found the riser with integral rings, but not what I want. My 10X is a 30mm tube. I won't say that glass will stay on that rig.
I can swap rings, I don't want to be stuck with a specific tube size.

60 gr Hornady HP flat base has a good reputation at 100 yards.

Hard to complain about those groups, really good shooting. I've had excellent groups with 50 Hornady VMAX in
.22-250, 1 inch at 200 yds for five shots. I think it is a really good bullet.

If I remember correctly ..guys were finding that the poly tipped bullets were wobbling at ranges exceeding 300 yds something to do with the tips heating up and getting soft....all I got is 200 ..unless the cranberry bogs become available again then it's 550 - 600 yds...so that's not an issue..

I did try some 62 grainers in this rig when I first got it but was disappointed in the results..probably my fault for not really trying too many combos..a friends upper with a 1-8 shoots groups like these with those bullets..

Thanks for the input guys...I have to smile 'cause this has turned out to be my Sunday go to shooting gun...I only pull it out every so often now and shoot 20 rnds max..but boy it's fun when I do...kind of show off and all that..you know..

The other good thing about this exercise is that it's got me following through with my other project...this is going on my 1903 Rock Island..think I'll get groups as good as these..???
