Ruger GP100 44 Special

Good morning
Been watching the price slowly drop over the last 5 months. Some fellers are still trying to sell them over the $650 level ??? But average "you can find price" is under $580.
So yesterday jumped on one that was at $560 plus shipping. There are a couple outfits that are running them at wholesale start price but bidders usually take them above $ 570.
So next summer when up north the kayak gets a new 44 Special in the nylon holster.

I am interested in them. Good gun with a good cartridge. Seems some are having throats size issues, usually on the large size.
Makes for a very practical sized gun with some good punch.

Just too heavy for my liking. If weight wasn't a concern, the S&W Model 69 Combat Magnum will handle the 44 Magnum, also, with less weight. Now, if only it was available without a hammer.......

I have held the S&W 696 5 shot 44 Special which fits my hand very nicely. But for $950 used a wack on a good day is way past my comfort level.
Own a Rossi 720 5 shot 44 Special which is just like the S&W but 1/3 that huge price, shoots nicely and carries easily.

The Ruger weighs just a couple ounces more and being built like a safe will take all the abuse as a hunting / kayak revolver that might befall it. Plus it will handle any 44 Special load plopped in it. The S&W and Rossi will not. So for a few ounces more it is just what this revolver shooters wants.
Too bad Dan Wesson did not see the light and make a 5 shot 44 Special on the 15-2 frame.

We have a 4 inch 44 mag Model 29 and that thing is fine for hunting but far to big for CC or the kayak. Sure do not need all that mass and weight for 44 Special loads.
So happily Ruger made that little 5 shot on a small frame for half the price of a used S&W.

That is just another aspect of Freedom.. Choice.

Choice is good.....that's why I opted for the CA Bulldog. Made in USA, lifetime warranty, with excellent customer service. Or, so I've heard. Isn't built like a safe but it doesn't weigh as much as one, either. Almost half the cost of the Ruger.

I carry a handgun daily. From the time I get out of bed, till I retire for the night. Usually, it's a S&W 642......I challenge anyone to do the same with a 36 ounce hunk of steel......then say it's comfortable.

The Bulldog, even with it's 2 1/2" barrel, isn't very concealable. I only carry it while bow hunting or working around my acreage. The snake shot loads that I got from Rick, are more effective than those for the 38 Special.

Like posted this is for our Kayak.
Have the 720 or a titanium 44 Special for carry. They both carry just fine for me. A little 5 shot 38 Special is a fine small revolver. We have several. But I also like that 44 special Titanium. Just a bit more bulk and does not weigh more than 19 ounces.

Nice gun and you will enjoy it.

I always wanted Ruger to make this gun...but when they finally did...it is just larger than I was thinking that it would be, so, I have passed on them.

Shot a buddy's. Shoots well. Liked my Skeeter loads. hated the glow worm sights on his. And his grips (aftermarket, finger groove, and they hit the bone spurs/calcium knots in my hand). But loved the gun.

I considered one. I wouldn't carry it so weight isn't an issue. I decided the 624 does all I need from a 44 special.

Congratulations!

Love the gp100 6" 357 ss & have no problem carrying it all over the sandhills & forest. They ride in trucks & boats nice to.

Nylon holster is the only no go part for me. I much prefer leather & will do plastic occasionally.
