Literally ran into these this AM, driving the Limo through the woods. Something the Jolly Green Giant might be interested in. Have no idea if their edible.

I know how to find out but I don't recommend it. I keep them picked out of the back yard before they get that big lest the dog decides they are chew toys. Don't want her to find out either.

How about asking the local state ag extension agent? Those appear to be some sort of stalked puffball, which can be really good to eat before they fully mature. Not all puffballs are edible, so it's a tough call unless you can get an expert to ID them positively. It would be worth the pursuit in my estimation, you might have a great resource there. We eat Morels and tree bark mushrooms in these parts.

it would suck if they were edible and you didn't eat them.
of course the opposite could also be applied.

Therein lies the problem. Had a guy show me a mushroom in each hand, says this one if fine to eat and this one will get ya really sick. I couldn't tell a lick of difference between them. I would never trust me to pick wild mushrooms.

Not puff balls. We have plenty of them, most are very dark brownish red. These were a white fleshy solid, through and through.
I'll buy my edible mushrooms at the grocery, thank you.

Right about now With our wet weather We are getting into Boletus Season.....As we Pols call them "spungies"
They are a safe bet at this time of the year in the northeast ...Sponge gilled mushrooms are all safe But some are tastier then others!
The yellow sponge is one of the best Cooked with eggs. I agree on the Morels but they are spring mushrooms here!
The 1st week of September in NE PA set off Ram's Head Season or Chicken of the woods ...as it is called They are tasty and are said to possess anti-cancer enzymes
Here is a harvest from a few years back!
