Of my 175 + bullet moulds, I do not own one with an engraving ring on the nose of the bullet like this Accurate Moulds version in the photo below :

  • Are there advantages to this ?
  • If so what are they ?

Looks like the DD ring NEI used. I suppose it is to allow easy engraving due to small size of the ring while keeping the nose centered on chambering. Think of it as a way to allow a bore rider to fit a wider range of bore sizes.

Now the big question, does it work? I don't know, never tried one.

Thanks Brad,

That's a REAL GOOD question that I left on in the OP.

Does it work ? ?

Buy one, cast a bunch, send them to me and we can find out?

Someone has to have at least some experience with the design feature.

Stan Borjesson of Camas wa developed that when he spent much time at nei.the 188dd was a hot bullet in the late 1990s.he got the idea from being a marine and basef it on some large projectile.Erik Ohlen has done this to a 314299 for a buddy shooting an oversized 303 and ir worked.
Nei added them after the cherry cut the block with a hand cutter to the size and location the customer asked for. I had Walt at nei cut me one 20 or so years ago. I no longer have the mold but the idea worked well in my 30 BR. Watching him cut the DD ring with the hand tool let you realize it was less than a precise process. He had a pile of them he accidentally cut the ring out too far and too small.Walt was an interesting man to visit to say the least.

Walt did a 311291 for about 1998, my most accurate 100 yard bullet, but will not carry well at 200 or in wind.

Yes it does quite well especially if the taper matches your throat pretty accurately. Like I said Eric Ohlen makes a taper die for lube sizer to tapet any bullets front band.

Ben,
I suspect you will Plain base this?:D

One of the nice things about Accurate Molds is if Ben wants a PB version all he has to do is tell Tom exactly how he wants it done, mail a check, and wait a couple of weeks.

That's RIGHT ! !

No compromises in shape style or diameters with Tom.

He is top shelf !

I have an ideal stop ring I should send you some samples to play with ben.the body is about .310 the nose .299 and the stop ring about. 320.I shot it in a mosin 7.62 x 54 and it actually shot pretty good despite the nose and body appearing to be too small.I had Erik make me a 311291 stop ring plainbase and it too did alright.I don't think it's better than any other type but it works.

Mold # 311259

Stop ring .320 " I have trouble closing my bolt on a .303 - .304 " nose 30 cal. cast bullet.
How am I going to close the bolt on one with a .320 " ? ?

It's for large throat guns like the krag and 7.62 x 54.I doubt it would work in an '06 but a 303 might be a go.

Some of the stop rings are tapered to match the leade.

A friend over on ASSRA sent me a couple of bullets to draw. It's a 308281 but, a special made one. Note that the tapered band goes from .314 to .320 and that extra long base band. The one thing that I couldn't draw is the scraper groove, in front of the tapered band. There is no option for it in the program.

Most German stop ring bullets have cylindrical bands but, the chamber is cut long to except it and those bands can be full OD neck diameter.

The case runs about 1.811 - 1.83 but, the neck area of the chamber, can be +/- 1.938, so the stop ring can be as long as ~.13.

I had a 308281 armory mold about 10 years ago. The band of mine was not tapered. When it played around with the 259 I actually will run it in nose first into a tapered die to fit different throats. Just kind of an odd ball designed to play with
