The Savage is Done!!!

I finally got the savage put together, as it sits now it is a 24" 358 Winchester. I plan on trying the high velocity challenge with this setup. I think I will be starting with the 35-200 RCBS, I also have a 308 barrel that is 26" and will get a few cast sent down it too.

Dang. That's a lot purtier than what I'm bringing, and will probably shoot better too. Did you weld the nut and make it a switch-barrel setup?

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Ian, I didn't weld the nut, I have a set of head space guages for these 2 barrels and screwed it down to be snug on the go. Then I torqued the barrel nut to 50 ft/lb. I can swap barrels back and forth in about 10 minutes, but I know me and this 358 is going to be shot as the main barrel, with others being secondary.

Just a few more pics as I got to take it to the range yesterday, I put 20 rounds down the barrel. These were jacketed loads but I had some 180 gr Hornady SP's hanging around from somewhere so I loaded them on top of 52 gr of BL-C (2). This barrel has a throat that reminds me of a Finn M39, it is looooonnnngggg, I could just barely get 0.020" jump with these 180's.

Anyway, the target is the last 3 shots at 100 yds, the top 2 are me walking it in from the 50 yd sight in.

There's a reason those rifles are popular. .3 MOA for a grand plus optics, and do all the work yourself with $50 worth of tools.

I am in love with this scope, I know it isn't the best in the world, but it is definitely becoming my favorite. This rifle may soon replace a few of my others, I plan on picking up a nice sporter stock and a few barrels in 375 and 416 Taylor, 280 AI, 243, and possibly 8x57. If that is the case I have a few bolt guns that may be on the market. One of these days I will buy myself a nice Vortex or Nightforce in the 24 power range, but until then I will be happy with my 18 power Leupold.

The group measures 0.703" outside to outside so you weren't far off Ian, subtract bullet diameter and it runs 0.345" now I know it isn't 10 shots or even a 5 shot group but I will get it up and running once I load cast for it. Now that I know the throat is 20 miles long I may not be able to run the 35-200 RCBS into the velocity necessary for the challenge, I know seating one to the crimp groove doesn't even begin to engage the bore ride so I may need to step up to something in the 225-250 gr range.

I'm eyeballing that Vortex myself for an upcoming project. Nice glass.
