This old mould...

Okay, it's really, really cold out, and I'm already bored. Lets talk about our favorite moulds. Most of us have a mould tucked away somewhere that has a story behind it. Some are simply favorites, some are old and rare, some are old and not so rare, or newer moulds that are special for various other reasons. Post as many times as you like, as many moulds as you like. I'll eventually add one of two after I think about it for a bit. Glens story of Reos hollowpoint mould comes to mind as an example http://artfulbullet.com/index.php?threads/a-bullet-casters-mentor.1887/

Years ago , I had Buckshot HP a .35 caliber, SAECO # 353 for me.
The mould is a double cavity. One cavity remains a solid, the other is Hp'd. The HP weighs 168 grs., the solid weighs 180 grs.

He did a fantastic job ! It shoots real well out of my two .358 Win. rifles, my two lever action 357 / 38 Spec. rifles and ( as you'll see below in the photos ) also shoots well out of 38 Spec. revolvers and 357 Mag. revolvers.

I cast about 100 or so this morning.
They drop from the mould at .361".
The HP Pin goes all the way to the crimp groove.

traded a magma mold for this same mold [pic I lifted elsewhere]
it works in both the 32 win and the 8 mauser.
only it isn't specced at 327 like this one, mine makes 324.

The 358009 has been a " classic " in .35 cal. for a very long time.
It is splendidly accurate. Hits like a locomotive ! !
These are sized .3595"
Have Hornady gas checks.
The solids from this mould weigh 290 grs.
The Hp's a tad shy of 280 grs.
They will be shot out of my three , 358 Win. rifles.
As you could guess, this one is a KILLER on white-tail deer.

That's one wicked looking bullet. What twist and velocity does it take to stabilize that big rascal?

I shoot 1-12 twist in my .35 cal. rifles.
Works well for me at around 1,600 - 1,700 fps.
I understand that some people have had problems with a 1-16 twist however.

impossible..16 twist should automatically give you 3200 fps.

I foolishly sold this one a few years ago to raise cash during an emergency. I still haven't found a replacement for it. I have a thing for the early Ideal SC moulds.

Thanks Ben, your 358009 really looks like quite a thumper! Here's my old Ideal 452460 (old style), with a newer design 452460 next to it. This one confused the heck out of me at first. I've posted this one here before in the past. I bought this one at auction. The seller had the wrong pic on the auction, and I kept after him to correct the billing because I was looking for a SC 452460 to hollowpoint. I saw this bullet design with blocks marked "452460" and hit "buy it now". I thought it was mismarked, but it turns out to be the original design for 452460. Glen has one too, but Glen probably has one of everything :)

I don't think I've ever seen one of the early ones.
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing the photo.

No pics but I bought a SC ideal 225438 from Rick in Yakima a year or two ago. I had it out last month and out of a hundred bullets 99 weighed + or - 0.2 grains of each other. The offender was off 0.4 grains.

I picked this one up today, 25$ with handles. Ideal 429352. Also bought another Lyman 450, 25$ with a 429 die and a top punch. Deal of the day.IMG_20180106_115213519-3936x2214.jpg

I'll be interested in seeing the outside dia. of that one when you have time to cast with it.

I cast a handful when I got home with it Ben. I think it would benefit from Ben tune up, a tiny bit of rust in the cavities. Nominal .429 in one cavity, nominal .430 in the other. Nose .417. Weight about 244 grs.

UUmmm, most of my .44's do well with a .431".
With that said, for $25 , I'm surprised the cops didn't follow you home.
A great buy on a hard to find mould.

I think with a light lapping that would be easily achieved.

Yes I agree.
Might take a few more " spins " in the .429 cav. than the .430.
Go slow and measure often.

I will Ben. I have a few I need to do a little lapping on. What I get for my Lyman addiction. I have a few more I need to get pictures of for this thread.
