Trying a different approach: light .45/70 mould

Just received this today to be shot in my Marlin 1895, bought it during the 20% off sale.

It's a beautiful mould. If it were female she would say "does this mold make my meplat look big?"

315 grain .460, looking forward to a lighter plinking bullet but depending on how it shoots it might see some hunting. I imagine it can be driven to 2000 fps if you have the desire. I don't but am curious if any members have hunting experience with a similar bullet?

I have good luck with Unique in reduced loads... any load suggestions?

I'm VERY interested in seeing this on paper " down range " !
Is that a plain base bullet ? ?
2,000 fps ? ?

Yeah, well I have not shot this and the only claim to 2000 was some load data I found. I'm from Missouri on this. But I'm throwing it out there to see if other members have experience. I have none.

Yes, a PB design and my interest is in a light plinking load (save some lead and my wife's shoulder) and MAYBE something to hunt with. It's really an exploration.

Anyone with ideas on how to effectively load a bullet lighter than the Gould? As mentioned, I favor Unique but solicit opinions.

Ben, I may be out of shooting until April owing to the white stuff and below zero temps coming. If you like I could send you some after Christmas to shoot down there in the tropics...

I shoot #457191 in my H&R with 12.0 grains of Unique for 1080 f/s and 14.0 grains 1260 f/s. Both are chronyed out of the 20 inch barrel with .452" grooves (former 45 colt). Both good loads with the 6 pound rifle.

as far as a hunting boolit.
compare your 315gr, 1200fps ballistics to a 454 Casull.

I see it. What i don't know is how the casull performs on game but I gather it's a bad a$$. Sorry, not a pistol guy but I try to follow along.

I'm not a big pistol guy either.
but the way I see it is this is kind of like asking about reduced 30-30 ballistics for 50-100 yd shots on deer.
many don't realize their reduced velocity's are more than comparable to a 357 magnum but with better penetration all they see is the reduced ballistics of their 30-30.
when you see things in that perspective and use them in the same way you get similar results,
only you get it without a bunch of noise and arm twisting recoil.

Ben, I located the load data I was referring to. Now, this is for a Ranch Dog 310 bullet. The mold I just bought and referenced in this thread is an NOE 315 grain.

According to the data you could push it to, or above, 2000 fps in a Marlin 1895. No idea how it would shoot, but there's always somebody wanting to do that.

I have no desire to do so as my intention is plinking or lower velocity hunting load... and as such I bought a PB design.

My shooting is mostly over for the winter as they don't plow our range. If you would like to give these 315's a try I could mail you some, see how they shoot for you.
