It's supposed to cool off here tomorrow, too. I'll believe it when I feel the cool NW wind.

If it does cool off, I might try to break in my new Accurate mould tomorrow night.

it almost made 45 today. [after scraping frost off the truck windows this morning]
but a very light wind so I was actually back down to a Tee-shirt by noon.

got the old Bergara out and slid the scope on it back about 5/8" this helps me not have to creep the stock so much and it was a bit more comfortable to shoot.
I decided to shoot some foamy cleaner down the barrel and let it sit for about 1/2 hr then pushed some patches down it.
all that come out was powder fouling, no blue, no flecks nothing.
so I pushed an oiled patch and 2 dry ones down it [getting a little more black stuff] and called it good.
it's been 40 rounds down the new barrel with no copper fouling to speak of.
I think I got a good one.

sliding the scope back only moved POI over about 1-1/2" at 50 yds so I was right on paper.
I diddled the left to right and put two shots cutting the same hole on another target then tried a 3 shot group at 100.
I was aiming at a little 3"x4" rectangle of green paper and a center hold put the group right above the card on a black piece of paper so I couldn't see the group until I walked down there.
it was small enough to cover with a quarter.
I was fairly happy with that, but not impressed, the girl next to me was and she asked about it.
so I went into a 3 minute spiel about swaging my own bullets and stuff, she called the guy with her over and showed him the group and told him about the bullets being home made.
he seemed really impressed and we chatted about reloading for a bit.

I decided to put the last 3 shots on the 300 yd 6" swinger and got solid center hits on all 3 so I called it a day.

the hunt opens tomorrow and I seen 2 or 3 Bucks down in the fields right below where I'm going tomorrow so [fingers crossed] I might get a poke at one.
probably take me 2 day's to get it out of there if I do get one since I have to skirt around private land in 2 different directions.
ohp reminds me I need to go get my coat out.

Raining hard here yesterday. Sunday was gorgeous, we moved a building almost to where it belongs. As always, it's that last 10 feet that's the bear. Found out the beaver are trying to move back into my sandpit and that my old standby summer rain coat leaks like a sieve. Wore the waxed cotton and darn near passed out from heat. Called it a day and spent Mon in the garage cleaning and mounting a 2.5 lb Sager Chemical DB axe head on a light single blade axe handle (Adirondack stye) for some up coming pole wood trimming. I did look at a rifle and found more 6.5x55 empties, so I'm on topic.

well it's a good thing I decided to make sure I was right on at 300 yesterday.
I got a nice 5x6 Muley this morning right at first light.
the shot ended up being a click over 400 yds, I was only about 3" to the left and about 2" low of where I aimed.
I really shouldn't have taken the shot.
400 yds is a bit out of my comfort zone, but they were heading right for the private property I had to walk around, they were relaxed and kept stopping and feeding,so I waited for a clean hit or miss broadside shot and took it.

it took me a bit to walk over and up to where he was and I missed where he had gone down by a good 75yds so I had to backtrack the other deer's foot prints in the frost to retrace back where they had been when I shot.
I was really starting to think I missed after about 20 minutes of looking and following their tracks, but could see where I shot from and knew I was in just about the right area.
I started working down to where I thought I seen him last when I shot, then I happened to see a little white patch and some antlers sticking up sideways down below me a bit, and it turned out to be his butt tucked up under some buck brush at the base of a cedar tree.
I knew I hit him good when he started doing the sideways backwards stumble and didn't take off with the other deer, but had lost sight of him when I worked the bolt to get a new round in the chamber and you never know until you either see them go down or filter out what the blood trail say's.

the thermo said 11 when I got out of the truck at the bottom of the canyon but it was tooth chatterin cold right before sunrise as I sat up on that mountain.
I knew it was going to warm up to the 40's today and wasn't interested in wearing some big old bulky coat I had to carry later in the day [but I was considering starting a fire for a minute there]

Still no measurable rain. Humidity was at 100%, the last two mornings and 70 degrees @ 5AM. Hit today's high of 80 at noon. Less than 4 hour later, were at 66 degrees and falling. Suppose to bottom out in the high 40's. Just maybe the deer will start moving.

Congrats on the muley, fiver.

Rain here today. Surprise, surprise. Headed out tomorrow after work to the high dessert of Central Oregon for a four day camping trip. Lots of hiking around in the sage and junipers and of coarse some trigger time. .22's, .38's, and .357's for me this trip. Bought a new chain for the saw. Lots of fire wood out there. Gonna need it. Lows in the low 20's at night.
One last outing before winter sets in.

Enjoy your trip, Waco. We just got back from a fishing trip on the Columbia by Hermiston. One more at the end of the month at Crow Butte for the last of the crappie fishing. Still warm at night in the low country, 30's, but freezing hard up on the John Day plateau.

It did cool off with usual Texas flair last night: 40 MPH gusty cold thunderstorm blasted through straight from the land of Hoth @ about two A.M., dropped the temp from 80-something into the upper 50s and dumped 3" of rain. We opened up the windows this morning for the first time in about six or seven months and I wore a light jacket all day. Got a full pot of bullets cast after work, too. We didn't have the usual killer hot summer, but the above-normal humidity made up for it.

We've had 2 or 3 frosts already, but the cold stuff should hold off another month down here in the valley. Of course when it gets here, it's here for 6 months!

Suppose to be near 90 again, by the weekend.:(

Yesterday's news reported we had a 32 degree temperature change in 24 hours.
