What is a good red dot for a scout mounting position?

I have a rossi 92 that needs a red dot for the base I got from NOE that replaces the rear sight. I have looked at the Ultradot 30 and think it would work but looking for opinions before buying one.

Its a 454 that gets hot loads at times, reliability is most important since its a carry gun fishing in Alaska

Ultradots are very durable, you just have to remember to turn them on and off. I fundamentally distrust any optic requiring batteries to operate, so I'd personally prefer a back up of some type if it were me.

New batteries for the field, Good batteries are the ones that still work that you replaced, for the field for the range or deer hunting. I use batteries for a lot of important stuff, its a management issue.

My Ultradot 30mm’s are all in handguns but I believe it would work well for you on your rifle. They are proven under heavy recoil.

You will not have the time to turn on any optic for bear defense........I have used a whole host of different red dots, over the years. Inexpensive Bushnell's......mid priced Vortex's, Ultra-dot's & Sig-Sauer's...... to expensive Trijicon's. The one I would recommend is Trijicon. Been using their product's for almost as long as they've been in business. You just can't beat totally automatic operation. No batteries , no rheostats to fiddle with......self compensates for varying light conditions.

I have two of their Accupoint rifle scopes and three of their full size Reflex's. Just yesterday, returned one of the Reflex's back for re-lamping. It was purchased in 1998. Lamp light life is @ ten years. However, they will still operate in all but total darkness, due to the fiber optics. Few months back, I returned a different Reflex, that they could not re-lamp. Trijicon replaced that one, with a brand new one, at no cost. They also returned the un-serviceable unit......that's why I now have three. Functional for most conditions, just not for total darkness.

Aimpoint.

Leave it on long as ya want. Rather buy used aimpoint than lesser quality unit. Aimpoint & trijicon are the only 2 I've used that adjust low enough to not have fuzz or starburst around the dot. They have most impressive battery life also. 1-2 moa dot is my preference.
