I've been really busy lately with the passing of my brother and i need to get back into my casting and loading too get my head right.
I have been sizeing my Saeco 315 on a 450 with a flat top punch and i'm wondering if there is a better punch I should be useing and if so what manufacture ?

Or dose it even matter ?

Thanks, Steve

I took an old 30 cal. RN top punch that I wasn't using anymore cleaned the interior of the nose cavity good with brake cleaner. Then I " roughed up " the interior of the nose punch with a small piece of 120 grit sandpaper.

Then, I filled the interior of the top punch with slow cure JB weld.
I coated the nose of the bullet with release agent.
I allowed the cast bullet to enter the sizing die about 3/4 of the way.
I used a bungy cord on my Lyman 45 to keep light pressure on the bullet and top punch.

12 hrs. later I removed the top punch , cleaned up any surplus JB Weld.
That was 10 yrs. ago. It still works perfect on a SAECO # 315.
There is no way that a top punch will fit the nose of a cast bullet any better than this system that I've described.

Haven't done one as Ben suggested for many years. It is a good process and works most excellently.

Yes, if I didn't have one to fit my # 315 and I didn't want to go the JB Weld route, I'd be contacting Al at NOE.

Ben...I went the low tech. route with one 40 years ago ...I needed to modify a top punch for a 45 cal. wadcutter..so I stuck some 50-50 lube up inside and then a thin piece of cardboard...still there ...still working...as I said very low tech.

The SAECO and Redding/SAECO top punches screw into the lube sizer. I believe NOE also made some Lyman/RCBS style top punches for the 315. I do not know if they are still in stock. I would use a flat punch. You may get better results as the bullet can enter the size die straight.

Just went to Al's Sight....my bad on the Saeco punches,,,he does list those separately and they are flat top screw in styles..

However ....if you click on any of the molds he offers the Lyman/Redding style or the Saeco style ..your choice...

The Saecos are offered separately but I don't see a listing for the Lyman/Redding..I would ask him...I would like to buy a couple more myself..
