Wind, Wind, and more Wind

Had up to 30 mph winds all weekend with some gusts higher. Yesterday was bluebird weather, with very little wind for Ne (5mph or so). However I was tied up with commitments, and couldn't get to the range. Today and for the next 2-3 days it is forecasted to be winds averaging 25-30 mph with gusting in excess of 40. A real bummer, as I had hoped to get to the range sometime this week.

I am Lucky however in that I have a very nice indoor range just about 6-7 mi from the house. I went there this a.m. with Walther P-1, and 357 Blackhawk. Shot 50 rounds out of the P-1 with 4 gr. of Red Dot under a flat nose commercial cast at about 1000 fps estimated. Only shot at 7 yds, but staye weill all 50 rds in the scoring rings, with 30 of them in the ten ring. Very good shooting for me, as I do not consider myself much of a hand gunner. Then I shot 50 rounds of 38S, 148gr. WC's, over 3 gr of Red dot from my Blackhawk. 10 at 7yds, 20 at 10 yds, and 20 at 15 yds, and did very well with it also, keeping about 30 of the 50 rds in the scoring ring.

It is handy to have an indoor range close by, even if it is a bit expensive even when you are a member. However, on lousy windy, and or extremely cold days, when you have an itch that just requires a trigger pull scratch to satisfy the itch, it is well worth it. Over the past winter I have been using it about once a week, and my hand gunning has improved (a little bit).

Paul,
Sunday & Monday we had the high 40 mph gusts all day ( The polar vortex descended on us!) A lot of trees came down Because we also got a wet snow.
We are now getting back up into the upper 30's low 40's but the winds are still near 20 mph. The only indoor range is about 35 minutes from me. Price isn't too bad but not a lot of shooting stations….so sometimes there is a long wait (usually on the worst weather days!)

Blowing like a bandit right now, gusts over 40, and same predicted thru Fri. Probably means that you will be getting winds from now thru the weekend in eastern Pa. It is bright and sunny however. Our indoor range has 12 shooting stations, and 25yds, and is quite new. I have only had to wait one time and that was for about 8-10 mins.

I've only ever been to an indoor range once and that was many years go. When I got there they announced to me that all fired brass was theirs, once fired I could not take it home with me. As I went out the door I mentioned something about sticking the place where the sun don't shine and never again went to that range or any other indoor range.

Rick..."my" indoor range allows the shooter to pick up his own brass but can't weep the floor to pick up every ones fired brass. These is another range near by that doesn't want you to pick up ANY brass - I don't go there. During the winter, I would not get to shoot if it were not for "my" indoor range.

Our indoor range allows you to pick up your brass. It always amazes me at the amount of 45ACP once fired is laying on the ground from non loading shooters. Not a problem for revolver shooters!

Unfortunately 30 mph is just an afternoon breeze for me. I am 17 miles W of the Continental divide and most days I need to be off the range by 10:30 AM if I care at all about my groups. Never seen it blow over 75 mph but the neighbor had his hanger blown over on the interstate a few years back.

I wonder how (or if) they can enforce that if you're shooting a wheel gun and the brass never leaves your physical possession?

I've never used an indoor range.

I shot at one once during the dead of winter.
there has to be that one guy.
you know the one, he parades around looking at every body's stuff then just has to pull out that Taurus 454 Casull and get his gloves and gear on to shoot his 5 shots before wandering around checking every body's stuff out again.
then tendering some advice.

Dunno Smokey, I didn't ask or stick around to find out.

Gusts to 45-50 last two days. No point in going to the range. Took a young man (19 now) who
I have mentored in shooting since he was 5 years old to the range Monday and he test fired
my Swiss rifle - the one in the avatar. He shot three just to clean out and warm up the
bore and verify zero, it hasn't been fired since Sept. Went down and looked and pasted them.

Then 5 shots, front rest, match peep sights at 300 yds. Three of 5 were in one inch, whole
group was 3.5 inches. Went back and put 5 more, opened the group to about 4.5" for 10.
He was pretty impressed with the Swiss K31. Not sure I can hold that tight anymore, would
love to have my 19 YO eyes back.

I think he can get a Swiss medal at the end of the month, will loan the rifle and told him I
will cover ammo for his first two attempts at the FeldSticht match on the camo gray-green
silhouettes. After that, he can borrow the rifle, but needs to buy some ammo and components
and we can build him some match ammo after he has expended the factory stuff. I may
have him interested in rifle competition.

It was still blowing yesterday, 12-15MPH, but I went to the range anyway. Was bright and sunny, and was about 60 degrees. Test loads w/Lee 22 from 6 banger over Rx7 in a 223 Axis, and 311291 and 170 Ranch Dogs in a 308 Stevens over Rx 7. My best group was 6 shots with the 223 (50 yds) into .6", but then I popped a 7th opening the group to .975. Started with 11.5 gr. of Rx7, and went up 1 grain at a time till I reached 14.5 gr. 13.5 showed some promise with 9 of 10 in 1.05, but rest were way wide. The groups from the 308 left muck to be desired. Best groping from a load of 22gr Rx7, under 311291, .310. Think nest time out, will go with the Harris starting load of 16gr. of 2400, which is usually a winner in most 308's.
