Primer Shortage

A few days ago, I saw a news article on Vista Sports who now own Remington Ammo. They have a one year, one billion dollar backlog of orders to fill. If you got caught short, it will be some time before primers and ammo will be available. Me? I have about 30K primers in my shop.

Well I broke down today and ordered a couple batches of the sharpshooter primer compound, from what I have read its not to bad, a little sensitive but that never bothered me. (I made the homebrew stuff - not matches for god sake) Anyone else try this stuff out.

thought about it, but I don't have the patience to pick primers apart and fiddle with them in any sort of large amounts.

At large, whereabouts unknown.
I have a CD around here somewhere that I got from a guy on the CB board who did a lot of research on priming compounds and ended up developing his own compound. I wonder where it is.... I'll have to find it.

BTW, I was probably the instigator on the match tip thing several primer famines ago. I got the information from the Army Manual "Improvised Munitions Handbook", and directed a number of people towards that information. I wouldn't give it to them directly, but told them where to find it. Now that information is hopelessly outdated since the "strike anywhere" matches necessary for success are no longer available in the U.S. All we get are the Greenies.

I guard my last two boxes of strike anywhere matches like gold. The last of the lifeboat matches are in match safes in the emergency equipment bags.

Sept. 10, 2021 Steve left us. You are missed.
Boy oh boy. The deer hunters here that waited to go buy their ammo until last week or this week are crying in their beers. "What, no ammo?" If it wasn't so sad it would be funny. Oh heck, it is funny.

At least the pressure to kill a big buck is off of them.

I have deer ammo. But do not need any this year. Helped a couple young fellows harvest their bow killed deer, so have a freezer full of meat.
That's ok, it will still be here for me next year.
Maybe I will just take picks of my sluggers, and other deer hunting ammo, along with my home rolled half jacket ....357s
. Then post them on hunting, forums with the tag" what ammo shortage?" LOL

Got $75? Or $300?

Today, GI Brass listed pulled .30 Carbine small rifle primers:
$75 per 1000
$300 per 5000
$30 Haz-Mat fee
Plus shipping

Just saying . . .

How do they pull them?
I didn't believe it. Went to the site. Yup. Pull down primers.
Do they use air pressure?

Almost 3X what I paid for 5k of WSP less than a year ago. Those 30 Carbine SR primers might not work so well in 223......Rem #6-1/2 vs. Rem #7-1/2. I'm glad to not be desperate for componentry.

Plainly said--neither ammunition nor the components for making same are stocked in great depth by distributors or retailers for end users. Any uptick in demand empties out the supply chain most ricky-tick. These shortages are followed by gluts and surpluses, and as a hobbyist you should wait for those fat times to lay in supplies for the rainy days that cycle through with some frequency.

if they come still inside the cases for that price I'd probably be interested in spending 300$.

Rem #6-1/2 vs. Rem #7-1/2.

I did not realize this. My FIL cast and loaded for the .30 Carbine and he had a few bricks of the 6-1/2s left in his estate. Now I know why. I figured they'd work for .38 Special full-wadcutter loads, am I right?

As I understand the differences between the Rems #6-1/2 and #7-1/2, the 6-1/2 was meant for cartridges like the 30 Carbine, 32/20 rifle, 25/20 WCF, and 22 Hornet. The 7-1/2 is meant for 222 Rem and 223 Rem. I have heard the #6-1/2 likened to other makers' Small Pistol Magnum primers.

I bought a bunch of Rem 6 1/2 small rifle primers when SPP disappeared. They were cheap also, twenty bucks for a 1k brick.

I’ve used them now in my 40 S&W Shield loads and in some 38 special loads. They have all gone bang. In the Security Six I fired them both single action and double action, they did just fine.

If what we know of as H110 was developed for the M1 carbine, and it is generally recommended that a magnum primer be used with H110, would it not be logical to reckon that the pulled M1 carbine primers are magnums?

Magnum compound or hard cup (floating pin in the M1 Carbine) would make sense.

Added factoid--in the smaller rifle calibers I listed above, changing out to the Rem #6-1/2 from CCI #400 and WSR in those smaller calibers shrunk group sizes (sometimes in half), SDs and ESs in these calibers. This was across-the-board in all of the calibers. Our member "Urny" (Ernie Beller) mentioned their use in the 22 Hornet, and the immediate success it enabled in that caliber prompted me to make the change in the other chamberings. I have yet to try the experiment with the SPM/CCI-550 primers in these smaller cases.
