Herters Gear

Remember when Jacques Lenord Pierre Herter III saved his mother from a Cougar using his 401 Herter Ram Magnum revolver ?

Remember the wonderful phrase: "drugstore cowboys" ?

Remember Wasp Waist Sonics ?

Wonder why they went belly up ?

The term "drugstore cowboy" has been around many, many years. When in the early 60's, I was a student at Sul Ross College in Alpine Texas, the one genuine original, honest to gosh cowboy college in America, these types were called "The Rexall Wranglers".

We used to have a Rexall pharmacy in Kerrville. Dang, I though it was the only one, but I was just a kid and never thought much about it until it got bulldozed.

On the advert sidetrack, I get a kick out of Duluth Trading Co.'s flyers. Being a customer, I've found about 95% of the lighthearted hype to actually be true.

Duluth makes some good stuff. My wife loves their flannel shirts with extra buttons to prevent gaping. She also likes their tank tops because of the extra length.

Their commercials are awesome too.

I can remember when I was a kid sending SASE's to lure manufacturer to get their catalogs. They all claimed their lures would "pull any canine in from miles away". If what they advertised were even close to true there wouldn't be a furbearer alive in North America! Sure kept a kids hopes high though.

The F-102 was prototyped and expected to go supersonic.....but the prototype just
hung at about 0.9 Mach or so, would not go faster.
A very young new aero engineer at General Dynamics thought he had the solution,
had to have a constant cross section of the whole airframe to minimize transonic drag.
So, they rebuilt the prototype fuselage with a coke bottle "area rule" shape, and it easily
slipped into supersonic. His name was Whitcomb. And later he came up with Whitcomb
Winglets....which my Long EZ has, and decades later, the airlines figured out that Long EZs had
the right idea, used on lots of them now.

And the Phantom II was an example of many. Two members of my family were "Phantom Phlyers",
as it said on their flight suit patches.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
We had Rexalls (Teakles Rexall) in my hometown and all over my area. You heard, "I'm going to the Rexall." more often than, "I'm going to the drugstore."

"Rexall Wrangler", I like that, has a real ring to it.

The leaders of the Rexall Wranglers were two guys name Harry Hayhook and Bobby Bobwire.

We didn't have Rexall Wranglers in my day, but Harry Hayhook and Bobby Bobwire had kids, and in my area they were known as "Plastic Fonzies". They were the guys that tried to look like Fonzie off "Happy Days" but all they could afford was the white tee shirt and jeans with a cheap vinyl black "pleather" jacket. Honestly, a lot of those white tee shirts were more of a dingy gray and needed a wash just as bad as their owners...
